Disappointing Monsoon Season

Here in Southern New Mexico the monsoon moisture is very shallow. Rain clouds form. We have a few drops, and the clouds disappear. We are way too dry for this time of year.

The temperatures are beginning to rise due to lack of our daily mountain showers. The clouds and rain usually come in around noon and drop temps for the remainder of the day. We have sparse development.

If you live in a monsoon area, are you having typical rainfall amounts?

Excuse my ignorance but, I had no clue monsoons occurred in the US. Other than "flood causing heavy thunderstorms" never heard about them on the national or my local news either.

The states in the Desert Southwest have a monsoon season when moisture flows from the Pacific across the region. It is the time of the year we have good precipitation. The monsoon season runs from June 15-late September. The states most impacted are Arizona and New Mexico because of the direction of the flow of moisture. Parts of Colorado, Utah, Nevada, Texas and sometimes California receive this seasonal moisture surge.

Arizona’s Monsoon

Arizona resides within the North American Monsoon geographical arena. The monsoon season typically begins in early June when active thunderstorms build in central and southern Mexico. In mid- to late June, the thunderstorms move toward the International Border and into Arizona. The monsoon is a season where the dry, westerly winds (winds coming from the west) that typically persist through fall, winter and spring shift to moist, southerly winds (winds coming from the south). The incoming moisture helps build thunderstorm activity across the state.

Rain...RAIN? What is rain? I live on the west side of The Valley (Peoria, AZ) and the only rain we've seen in this so called monsoon are the few drops just enough to make our cars all spotty. We did have a wind storm once and a few drops but that is all we've had in months. This summer has been miserable and won't end until October. QVC keeps saying summer is almost over by Labor Day....I wish.

We haven't had a drop of rain in Albuquerque since May 21st. It's been much longer in my neighborhood since we're further from the mountains, which attract moisture.

This is very serious because we normally get most of our yearly rainfall during monsoon. It'll probably start raining when we try to have a balloon fiesta in October.

I live in NE AZ and so far we've had about 2"; last year we had 14", so unless the rest of Monsoon season is very wet we are way below what we need.

I moved to NM about 24 years ago after managing to escape Texas, both Houston and West Texas for 33 years. Before that we lived all over the South and Mid-West plus Pennsylvania. Born in Colorado.

Very disappointing.

I'm growing weary of the snake oil. We were promised a real monsoon season in New Mexico because of El Niño and it hasn't materialized.

We get the wind, the thunder, the lightning, the ominous clouds, and then -- nothing.

The rain evaporates before it hits the ground.

We were told that August would be wet. Now they're backpedaling, and August will be as dry as July.

September, now, will be when we get some rain.

I'll believe it when I see it.

The Southwest coordination of forest fire readiness has moved New Mexico and Arizona into Level 4 preparedness for firefighting teams. Level 5 is the highest level. We are experiencing an added Wildfire season because of the lack of monsoon rains.

The original forecast was temperatures in the 80s and rain for August.

I couldn't wait.

And now it's just a replay of July. Temps in the 90s all month and no moisture.

My plants are struggling. I'm going to have to increase the watering.
