That's always my worry with fresh broccoli - how to make sure it comes with no insects or - worse - worms.

I am sure everyone has eaten insects in their foods unaware...even vegans.

I just try not to think about it. Some red food coloring is made from insects and is added on purpose.

And, all figs have insects in the fruit.

@ValuSkr Hahaha! My DD always forked up her broccoli with trepidation after she found a dead spider at the bottom of a bowl of steamed home-grown broccoli. I didn't tell her about all the cabbage worms I picked out (and sometimes missed) of the broccoli.

Tell me more. I grew up eating lots of figs - 5 trees in the back yard - and never saw an insect in the fruit. I do remember that the trees were often full of ants who were drawn to the sweet fruit.

@shoesnbags I love figs and grew up eating them too. I looked into planting a fig tree in my back yard and learned way too much about them. I was better off not knowing.

LOL I think you're saying that I might be better off not knowing, too. Don't worry, no fresh figs in my current life. Just great memories of my grandmother's fig ice cream.

I read once that if you put a head of broccoli in a bowl under water, stand there a minute and you'll see tiny white worms crawl out. Well, I eat mainly organic so it might not be a true test but I didn't see any worms. You know what they say: "worms don't eat much." And at least they're dead after we cook it, lol. How reassuring.

Trader Joe's is famous for outdated products. (at least here) I always check the dates on their bagged veggies, etc.

I don't think there are any TJ's around here, but I'm bet they aren't alone in that. Does seem as if they are having a lot of recalls lately. I'm sure if we knew the half of what's in our foods we'd be cringing.

I have not seen this or the two cookie recalls show up on the FDA's website. This is unusual. I'm concerned that, as far as I know, they are not working with the FDA for these recalls.

@Mindy D Not everyone checks the FDA listings anyway. Most folks are not food investgators.

Trader Joe's clearly lists recalled products at each register with a picture and a description of the problem. Sometimes it is regarding an unlisted ingredient and sometimes a more serious problem which can affect health.

I was at TJ's this morning; the cookies and the soup are clearly visible and the frozen fruit is still listed.

As far as how any store works with the FDA-the website has several articles.

I'm sure TJs is not trying to hide anything.
