Is It Really That Cold?

The hosts are always saying how you need this cover up, sweater, jacket, etc. because restaurants and theatres are always freezing in the summer. I suppose it depends where you live, but here in the northeast restaurants are never that cold. I find them comfortable and certainly no need for a sweater. I always have a light coverup wherever I go but rarely need it. I'm sure part of it is a selling tactic. Do you find restaurants in your area freezing?

@Biftu My downstairs is freezing. Supposedly when our houses were built 20 years ago the duct work wasn't sufficient enough for the AC, heat works ok. My AC condenser unit is only a couple years old and my AC guy did the best he could.

Looking into an attic fan but in the meantime in order to keep the upstairs cool and tolerable at night the downstairs is a freezer. i.e. I have to wear a sweater, warm throw, even turn on the Duraflame sometimes!

Crazy, right?!

I'm in Arizona and it's 116 degrees. I want it cold when I go into a building. It takes a while to cool down. I barely wear a sweater or jacket in the winter but I do sometimes take a sweater if we go to the movies.

@Biftu , No, in the summer I welcome the AC.

I am with you. Also in the northeast and would not more think of taking a jacket or cardigan with me in this weather than I would a pair of mittens. The coldest facilities seem to be the supermarkets, and to me they are comfortable. Theaters, banks, stores, museums are often warmer than I like in the summer. But I am not a summer person, and if one actually likes warm weather, comfort levels would be different.

@Biftu I feel just the opposite of you. I am really cold in restaurants and a sweater or jacket is a necessity. Can't wait to get out of there. Office is the same, freezing all day. Movie theaters and grocery stores - freezing.

I have so many jackets and cardigans and use them all summer.

I have always said places need to turn the air down and increase their profits with a lower electric bill.

YES...I'm cold natured so I find most restaurants and theaters very cold. In the winter, I rarely take off my coat in a restaurant.

Our church is very cold (and others agree). I was telling somebody a week or so ago that I'm going to start wearing my winter wool sweaters. Even with a jacket or cardigan, I'm cold.

But, yes, this is tactic to sell, sell, sell!!!

@Biftu I find this comment very accurate. We live in a very warm climate so if we are outdoors we get acclimated, for the most part, to the warmth. So, when we go indoors it can seem so much colder than it actually is, if the AC is on.

I also workout most every morning. I get sweaty and sometimes need to run into the store after my workout. Wow, the grocery stores I go to are so cold. I always have a light cover up to use when I go in. And don't even get me started on the Costco "cold" section. I dread going in and getting my lettuce and veggies. I hate that section.

So, I don't feel this is so much a "selling tactic" as a reason you may want to purchase the item they are selling.

No, I don't need a sweater in a restaurant here in Chicago. But how else will they sell sweaters when most of the country is undergoing a severe heatwave? Definitely just a sales tactic.

@cjm61 Had to laugh at the Costco cold section, what a cavernous horribly cold room, can't stand it either! Sam's Club has it also and some days it's both Sam's & Costco shopping, so stinkin' cold.

I haven't been to a lot of restaurants lately, but when I did I can attest they are pretty cold in the South. And yes, I do take a jacket or wrap when I eat inside a restaurant. And not just since I am old.

Our Costco has a icy cold room too. I put some speed in my shopping in that section!

🌬 I live in PA, and find businesses to be a tad stingy with the air conditioning. I'm sure that is due to the jump in costs for electricity here.

I'm in The South and I keep a little jacket in the car or grab one when leaving with my husband to go pretty much anywhere just in case. I generally don't worry about style though, just that it fits over what I'm wearing. If it's cool outside I might make the extra effort to check my coat closet for something stylish and appropriate. Some places I know I'll need a jacket, grocery store, certain restaurants. My favorite mexican restaurant doesn't need one though. What I really hate is feeling the cold air coming out of the vent. I swear, every booth in Applebees has a vent over it, so absolutely a jacket there. I have the same problem at home. While the house may be comfortable, there's a vent near the family room chair I sit in and I can't stand feeling that cold air blowing on me.

@Biftu - I live in Atlanta. I have never, ever, had to take a sweater or jacket anywhere here in the summer.

Stores, other than grocery stores, (which can be quite cold), are rarely chilly, though they're often overheated in winter. But yes, many restaurants are cold. It seems temperatures are set for the comfort of the staff and not the customers. I often take a light wrap in case I need one when going out to eat.

In the summer, I have never uttered the words "It's too cold in here" since I was a kid and my dad just bought the biggest window air conditioner he could get.

I remember fondly sitting in the den people wrapped in blankets eating home-made ice cream because somebody forgot to turn it off before company came.

But since? Never found it too cold for me in summer anywhere. Air and Space Museum came close--
