Costco fans we’ve got some bad news. Costco is putting a stop to Membership Card sharing effective immediately!

Employees will now be verifying that your name matches your membership card when you enter the store and when you checkout.

So far BJ's allows "sharing" as the "sharer" has their own card. My mother shares w/me & she lives in another state. She's had no issue & I've never received a cease and desist letter from them. When paramour makes a run to BJ's, he uses my card & we live in separate households & his is out of state.

BJ member for 30+ yrs.

I read about this on the Reddit forum and they are getting very strict. I just came from Costco and they verified my photo before I could check out.

Not a problem for me, my son shares my account, but I pay extra for him and he has his own card with his name on it. Though it just dawned on me that folks like us who don't share are picking up the tab for all of those who do

If I'm not mistaken it was never permitted. People just did it.

I have a membership at BJ's, Sam's Club, and Costco. All three of the membership warehouses permit a second membership card to one individual within the primary member's household...under their roof.

Unfortunately it seems that's been abused much like streaming services.

I'm all for checking if it means my membership won't continue to rise.

My kids don't have Costco where they live. When they come to visit I go with them and they pay for their own purchases using my card. My daughter is my spouse on my Sam’s membership so she can go there whenever she feels like even though we live in different states. They are college students so I do whatever I can to help them out.

Glad the cheaters will be getting stopped. I pay for my membership and it bugs the heck out of me that those who decide to cheat have been getting away with it.

Wanna shop Costco, buy a membership.

I was at Costco last week they checked my card as I and everyone else walked up to self checkout
It wasn’t a quick glance they really looked at the cards and our faces

@MG Chris I've wanted a membership card to Sam's and Cosco,but justify it being by myself.I really enjoy shopping,but can't see myself buying anything in bulk

I have a Costco membership & my son has a BJ's membership.We don't ever use eachother's cards.

I don't think it's right to give a family member a card who lives far away. I don't blame Costco at all. They provide great savings for their members & they count on the membership fees to help cover costs,so they can turn a decent profit.

Costco is also an excellent employer. They have always paid above minimum wage. I understand if you want to help out a family member,just buy them a membership.

@Luvsmyfam, but if you have the space it's easy to buy bulk for things like paper products and beverages. For their fresh meats and cheese just freeze what's not soon used.

And they do sell some things in smaller portions. You can't beat the $5 rotisserie chickens or the $2 for 2 lbs. bag of garden salad.

When they have a sale (called instant savings) on products you really do get great deals on coffee, or over the counter drugs and vitamins.

I think the savings I get just from buying my gas there pays for the membership.

I think they still give a day pass to someone wanting to check out the store. Wouldn't hurt to look into it.

Sam's Club let my husband and I look around the store but we were not allowed to buy anything if I remember correctly. @Luvsmyfam

Costco is not ending anything. That has always been their policy. They're just policing it now. You can add 1 member of your household that lives at the same address free of charge. They will get their own card with their picture on it.

@SurferWife they didn't. They just didn't verify that the person buying was actually the person on the card. Now they do.

I am alone. I always manage to find stuff lol. I do buy meat and break it down, I do buy some produce, eggs, protein shakes, the rotisserie chicken. Toilet paper and paper towel.
