So I live in an apartment that has central air conditioning, which I don't like as it cools off rooms your not using. I was wondering what is a good number to set the thermostat at to save money? I looked it up online and it was recommended 78 degrees which seems too warm to me. I think I'll set it for 74 degrees, what do you think?

I always keep mine at 78, but I also have fans in rooms I most frequent. I turn them on and it circulates the air well. I always sleep with one on, too. 78 used to seem too warm for me, too, but I have gotten use to it and it now feels comfortable.

It's really kept my energy use down. On power player reports, I'm usually only around 14 out of 100 for energy usage. It makes me happy to conserve energy whenever I can. Wish everyone would, to lower the risk of power outages.

I have an evaporative cooler instead of refrigerated air. All I pay for is the electricity to run a small pump and a little water. I have no thermostat, it's off or on. It gets so cold in the house at night, I get up, turn it off and don't restart it until the next afternoon. It's never higher than 70° in the house and may be 60° in the mornings.

Experts say a central AC unit will only cool 10-15° below the outside temperature. If it's 100°, you're still going to be hot.

I do miss having a swamp cooler. We have a two-stage A/C and keep the upstairs vents closed and doors closed unless DH needs to use his office or we have guests staying overnight. We keep ours set at 74-75 with ceiling fans going in every room and raise it to 77 at night. A ceiling fan allows us to turn the temp up. Will be 100 tomorrow but the heat index is still 110 and it is after 8 pm. Heat index tomorrow is supposed to be 115-120. It's miserable.

If I set our temp to 74 or 70 or 67 it would never shut off and the electric would be well over $1000. I can’t even imagine setting it that low.

I sometimes set to 79 when we have a heat wave of 110 or more. Most of the time 78.
