Sitting around watching your neighbors is just weird. 🤣

I think the idea was to get some air. The summer days and evenings can be so hot and humid-they didn't have a/c yet so they had porches and after dinner people would go out on the porch and fan themselves, lol. In the afternoon they drank lemonade-it's said to be cooling. That's where and why porches were created! Now people want them for the nostalgia but you know what? They don't go out onto the porches that much-they go into their air conditioned houses.

This is good! I agree about enjoying simple pleasures in life! For me, I go to my back patio! It's not as quiet I would wish, with being so near all the neighbors, but at times it's nice. We all need a little space and place for quiet reflection. A place to let go of things and unwind!

Some of my happiest memories of the past 80 years were made on the front porches of my grandparents, great aunt, and great grandmother. They lived in a small town in Indiana where everyone sat outside after dinner. So sad that the porch swing has been replaced by technology.

I'd rather be inside where it's air-conditioned in the summer. There were no air-conditioners back in the old days so they went outside on the porch to cool off. That's what porches were for back in the old days...to cool off. Air-conditioning changed everything. One of the greatest inventions of all in modern times.

In my neighborhood there is little more than a casual "hi, how are you" between neighbors while coming or going.

However, at least two or three times between spring and fall one of the neighbors will sit on his porch with his guitar and start playing.

Within a short period of time neighbors start drifting over and before long some with a banjo, guitar or other instrument will join in resulting in an hour or two of "the good old days".

Growing up in my neighborhood where "everybody knows your name" as in Cheers was a great experience. There were 20 houses on my block and believe me I was in all of them. One of the neighbors (the cookie man) did exactly that. While we were eating the goodies he'd tell us about the good ole days.

All the nighbors came out after dinner and visited each other, sitting on porches or in driveways until the sun went down. Everyone helped each other.

Today -- I still live on the same block and if I passed my next door neighbor, whose been living there since 2016, I wouldn't recognize them.

Enuf said!

I hated growing up in a small town. It was like a fishbowl and heaven forbid you have an idea that is different from anyone else. It's still like that today....once you move away that's it. I know several people who returned "home" to live and were shut out by everyone except their families.....these were single men and women. Strangers moving in have also said they are not fully accepted by the community.......per a county wide survey.

Just saw a raffle online today...........winners choice of cash prize or a gun.

Ironically, we're going through the process now of getting permission from the city to put a porch on our (new build) home.

Almost all our neighbors have one, new homes, old bungalows and everything in between.

I didn't think I'd want one, but after enjoying our neighbors', it's a must.

So the check writing campaign begins, first to an architect, then a lawyer and then permits from the city.

Ours will be semi-private because of trees, a large crepe myrtle and I'll hang Boston ferns.

We have a large covered back deck, but in the early morning, the sun still hits it sideways and our front yard is shady at that time.

Nice memories of my great aunt's big back patio that had a big oak tree hanging over it for shade....we would always go there after dinner; she had a creek

at the back of her yard and the tiny frogs would hop all over the newspapers the grownups were reading, and my siblings and I would sway ourselves to sleep on her big metal glider with the flowered cushions...I can almost see them now..thanks for reminding me! Sometimes my aunt would bring out her ice cream maker to the patio and we would take turns turning the handle....then she would pour in the fresh peaches from our back yard trees. Oh my goodness....nothing will ever taste better!
