Tipping at the self checkout?

When you use the self checkout at a store, do you check a tip amount when it comes up on the screen? I was appalled to think I am expected to tip a checkout computer when no one has helped me...I have helped myself!

They started doing that a few months ago at our Walmarts, I flat refuse. Ridiculous.

I've never seen a "tip amount" at a self-checkout counter.

Can you give us an example of where you've seen this?

ETA: @beckyb1012 - we were posting at the same time. I have never seen this at Walmart and I was just in there a couple of days ago. I'll watch the next time.

But, no, I would not "tip" at a self-checkout. It's bad enough, when you order food cafeteria-style and are expected to tip for that.

I've never seen a "tip" request at a self-checkout, but I have had opportunities to contribute to various charities. Just like they do with the human checkers.

Some are so upset about Walmart doing it that they are ranting on tik tok. I have always wondered what exactly all those Walmart employees are doing on their phones standing off to the side why we scan and sack?

I have not seen this either.

In fact tipping is not even part of checking out when ordering curbside pickup at our grocery chain. At least we see a worker when our order is loaded into our car.

Where does the money go or are we being prepared for tipping AI somewhere soon??🤔

Who would get the tip? If I'm doing the work I want that amount off my bill....and I'm a big tipper so make sure I get it all!

@beckyb1012 - I have to say I've never seen any Walmart employees on their phones at our local stores, but I suppose it may depend on where you live.

There's usually only one clerk in the self-checkout area to help, if someone needs it. They are holding a store radio/price-checker, but that's all I've seen.

I'll be very interested to see if this "tip" idea shows up here. I know what customers will say to that!

Never. Only round up for certain charities is all I have seen. Not getting a money tip from me when I do my own work and prices still rising.

When my neighborhood Walmart Green (grocery not Blue SuperCenter) went to self serve there were a ton of workers standing around with their phones. They were all the checkout clerks prior to the change. It as eased up on the number. Only about three or four during peak times and only one I noticed last week at 7:00 a.m.

I had to go into a Walmart last Friday. I was looking for some floral wire on my way to the cemetery to do flowers and had forgotten to bring mine.

I couldn't find any..,asked a guy with a Walmart name tag and he said he was "off the clock" so couldn't help me. I asked if he knew where I could find someone who could help me and I got the same reply. Went to another area and asked an employee who never looked up from his phone if there was a manager on duty and he said no, they don't have managers on Fridays. Finally found the wire on my own, next to the notebook binders, but it had no price on it or SKU on the shelf. Took it to the cashier and figured they could get the answer even though I couldn't. Nope. The guy said " you probably shouldn't buy it since it doesn't have a price." ARGHHH!
If Walmart expects tips at the self checkout, they shouldn't hold their breathe.

I don't use self checkouts but if I did and a tip screen popped up, I would enter a big fat $-0-.

I used self checkout at the Walmart Neighborhood Market just yesterday, and I have never seen nor heard of such a thing....if that were to happen I want no part of it..

I haven't seen that so far but I see it at certain fast foods where there is a tip jar. For what? I placed the order and they hand me a sack. No tip, I don't tip for things I do myself. Pay your employees, Lord knows the prices are up.

IMO tipping has gotten totally out of control. I mean seriously? Everyone wants to be tipped but they don't want to do the job. I would never tip at a self serve computer.......jeez. My cousins husband plays in a band locally and sometimes we go out to see them play. Last time there was a bucket on the stage and I asked my cousin what is was for. She replied, it's a tip bucket and that all the bands were doing it now.

I didn't say anything but I feel it's tacky. You already are tipping the waitress and or bartender........now we're expected to tip the band who is being paid to play????

Definitely not! In fact, they should give a rebate for checking out yourself!
