Harry Belafonte Has Died

Harry Belafonte, the actor, activist and singer who popularized the Calypso musical style with his famous song "Day-O (The Banana Boat Song)," has died. He was 96.

Belafonte died Tuesday of congestive heart failure at his New York home with his wife Pamela by his side

We had the album Jump Up Calypso (1961) when I was a child. This was my favorite. It was used in the movie and Broadway production of Beetlejuice.

OMG do I love this song!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

One day I drove two of my kids crazy when they were teens playing this song at top volume over and over in the house. One of them reminded me last year of the incident and played it in her kitchen while me and her husband danced to it.

I was lucky enough to attend his concert in 1964 at the Carter Barron Amplitheater in D.C. One of the best concerts I ever attended. Such a talented performer and a great human being. Read this morning in NYT that he bought a life insurance policy on Martin Luther King with MLK's family as beneficiaries.
