Awful! I hope no one was injured.

I hate parking garages and always have an urge to duck my head when in one. I try t avoid them when I can but sometimes it's the only choice.

You do not park your own car in this type of a garage, the attendent gives you a ticket and they park your car for you

I've been watching...this garage structure was an accident waiting to happen. Manhattan has so many challenges. This was true when I worked in Manhattan, but it has deteriorated rapidly over the last couple of years. I understand the New York State of Mind and my wishes are for safety and the ability to live a peaceful fulfilling life for NYC residents. Let's hope there are no more injuries/death reported. Prayers for victims and their families.

The FDNY deployed its mechanical dog when the structure was deemed too unstable for firefighters to enter.

Streaming video could assess the situation and look for survivors.

Drones were also used for an aerial view.

Thank you for this News Item.

I was wondering if this is the same underground garage that years ago, was test bombed, prior to Sept 11th? And perhaps was weakened by that prior bomb testing incident?

This has absolutely no connection to the original World Trade Center.

The Ann Street location is blocks north and much further east of the former World Center site.

It was reported on the news this morning that they had a structural report showing cracks in the foundation dated 20 years ago!

The city said a days-long (if not weeks-long) controlled demolition is underway, with the goal of taking down the rest of the garage without damaging neighboring buildings. Contractors had already removed a large portion of the façade of the building, along with six cars.

Also making the dismantling more precarious is the amount of hazardous waste that is inside the building: Car gas tanks, fluids and possibly electric vehicles (which can lead to fires that are much more difficult to put out), according to NYC Office of Emergency Management Commissioner.

Fire dept. memos know that battery fires can take between 3,000 - 8,000 gallons of water applied directly to the battery to fully distinguish and cool down. Battery fires can take up to 24 hours to fully cool.

Attention also turned to air quality in the dense neighborhood that includes apartments, dorms and hotels. The city installed an air quality monitor to check for high levels of asbestos.

The mayor’s office said that – so far – all sample results are below state and city limits.
