New Hairstylist

I know this has been discussed before.

However, the stylist I've followed around for 20 years has been disengaged the past few times I've seen her and my next door neighbor owns a salon, 5 mins away.

I think I'll take the plunge and try someone new. Shouldn't be too hard as I am growing out a messy bob for long, one length hair. I think it's a good decision.

Do it. Your "former" hairstylist at the very least ,made you feel unimportant. Who needs that and how stupid of him/ her to take you for granted.

It's hard to change hair stylists, doncha think? I had one for about 35 years. Then he retired. I found a new one and have been seeing her for a few years. Nobody cut hair like Mario, though.

@Sweetbay magnolia I'm all for trying something new, but what if you do not like the new stylist (your neighbor) will it be awkward to only use her once and then have to see her?

I went to the same person for haircuts for 20 years and became increasingly dissatisfied. She was inconsistent and didn't do as I asked her. I don't think she listened to a word I said. Disconnected was right. My haircuts got worse.

I finally made an appointment with a new stylist and am so glad I did. I got just the haircut I'd been wanting for years. Perfect, I was so happy and glad I made the switch.

@Kachina624 I remember you posting a picture of your haircut. I bet it did turn out great. I can't get the courage to go that short but I do love that style.

@cjm61 I've had shortish hair my whole life so it wasn't much of a change.

She's much younger and I think it matters not. We have a weird neighborhood set up. We rarely interact though it's always pleasant when we do talk.

Good point, but I think it's a non-issue. I won't be seeing her. It would be one of her staff. Her shop is busy so if I decide to move on I don't think it would even register.

My hair can be frustrating at times too! The last time I went to my stylist he did a nice cut and when he blew it out my hair looked amazing when I left the salon. So what's the problem? I just can't get my hair to look like when he does it.

Usually it's not too bad but it's been hot the last few days and a bit humid and my hair has decided to do what it wants to do. Even my son when he saw me today asked what did I do to my hair? I did style it but after an hour or two it looked like I had slept on it since it was sticking out in different directions. Not the smooth bob look that I usually go for.

I'm getting my hair glazed next week and in the past I have noticed that the glaze not only adds shine but it also keeps things under control and a bit smoother.

I went to the same hair stylist for over 20 years. She appreciated my business and it showed. You should try the other stylist. Don't spend your money on someone who is aloof or takes your business for granted. Too many other salons out there.

You can tell your neighbor you will be trying out a few new stylists...and if you don't return to her salon she will just know you found someone else....no reason to feel awkward.

It is so hard to make that change but if you are unhappy it is time to move on. I have been seeing mine since 1996 and no one else as touched my hair since. She became ill (not covid) right after I saw her in June 2022. She was not able to come back to work until the week before Christmas. I went 6 months with my bangs growing and my gray showing. All is good now. Big difference in an illness and just not doing their job correctly.

Years ago I stayed with a stylist way too long before making the decision to go to a new salon. I'm so glad I took the plunge (I still go to the "new" person, and still love her.) Your only glitch in going to your neighbor is what has already been mentioned above. If you don't like her work you don't want to have an awkward neighbor relationship.

I think some stylists take it for granted that their "regular" clients will stay with them regardless of how they perform. There's lots of competition out there & consumers have choices.

About 6 years ago, I went to my salon for color and cut, and was given to a young stylist since mine moved. Although she had my card, the results was far from what it should have been.

I didn't return and now have a wonderful stylist; she's a former student and shop owner!
