Doo Wop and Sweet Memories

A few moments ago, I came upon an online piece about a member of the well-known doo wop group the Mello-Kings. The member, Neil Arena, lives in a nearby community.

The Mello-Kings had a hit called "Tonite, Tonite." Hearing it again on YouTube brought back a flood of feelings and memories of my youth.

Anyone else remember this group and that era?

@golding76 WOW! Talk about nostalgia! I loved that music.

The summer after my first year of high school, this is what I was

listening to. That was the summer I met who was to be my future husband.

Those old songs were so romantic. Great slow dance songs.

I also loved Motown and most of the top 40 back then. We grew up in a great era.

That Renaissance Man is a hoot! He really loves those songs

that were recorded before his time. I watched more of his videos. He went wild for the BeeGees, another favorite group of mine.

It's pretty late tonight, but I will watch more of his videos and listen to the "Oldies". Now, the radio station that I have listened to for years is playing "oldies", songs from the 80's.

That was just a few years ago, now I feel old. That was my kids' music, when they were in high school.

Thanks for posting this, fun to listen to.

Enufstuff, I agree this music has no equal. It really doesn't. As you wrote, so romantic, so exquisite to dance to. Those were sweet times.

To think that you met your future husband with this music in the background. Beautiful!

For some professional rock musicians who grew up in the era of doo wop and early rock and roll, the music of this time is nonpareil. They've never found any other music to satisfy them as much.

Haven't heard these songs in a very long time. They brought back sweet memories of dancing in the school gym.

Wonderful lyrics and melodies. Singers dressed no nicely and moving so gracefully. Precious memories.

@golding76 I definitely miss songs when the lyrics afre understood. On my SiriusXM I always flip to the channels with 50's and 60's music.

Showing my age, but just don't "get" a lot of today's music. Now, give me a few country channels especially Luke Bryan or some easy listening with John Legend and I'm there.

Of course, Spotify has the same play lists. I can supposedly "hook up" Spotify to play directly from my car instead of phone, but after only having it for a month, lots I haven't figured out yet.

I guess this was a group I missed! I knew all the other groups mentioned. Pretty good. Santo and Johnny's "Sleepwalk" was a great slow dance song. I loved the groups the best. They should bring them back-it won't be the same but yes, they should bring them back. Start them again.

@golding76. Thanks for the memories. The oldies are definitely the best, imo. Being able to have lyrics you can understand and melodies you can dance to are important. Love all of the old groups. Getting to watch them on PBS specials, even from 10 to 15 years ago, is always a treat.

Richie Valens movie was great and in it was the link below song you mention. Can't imagine anyone with quite a few decades lived, not liking this song. No words to try to decipher, just great guitar music.

@hckynutjohn Great song, thanks. Santo and Johnny were wonderful. I loved listening to them and it was perfect slow dance music.

I saw the movie on TV about Richie Valens. I had heard that he

was headed for a great career. I remember the plane crash that took him, Buddy Holly and The Big Bopper. So sad, all that talent

gone, in an instant. So many great singers died in plane crashes, including Jim Croce, Ricky Nelson and John Denver.

I was 10 years old, when "Donna" was released. That is my name and my grandmother bought it for me, my first 45. I still

have it. I actually liked the flip side, " La Bamba", better. Great dance song. "La Bamba" became a big hit on our Boston radio station.

That was a great time to grow up in. Life was simpler and we

felt safe anywhere. People were civil to each other and respectful.
