Another school shooting in Denver

2 administrators were shot at East High School in Denver this morning. 1 is in critical condition and the other is in serious condition. So sick of all this violence. Can't believe how many very young kids are carrying guns and are so violent.

On the news it was said they have a "pat down" policy in place for certain students who may be carrying guns. What I took away from the policy is that administrators are doing the pat downs. Should be trained guard personnel rather than admin types.

Yes, you are correct about kids and guns: just a few months ago the country was saddened and horrified by the news story of the 6- year-old boy who shot and seriously injured a well-liked first grade female teacher.

I have not seen an update on that story in a while.

Administrators should not have been patting down the shooter. The SROs (School Resource Officers) were released earlier and should have been in place on campus to attend to this duty. Now that this has happened...I'm sure they will be reinstated. This could have been prevented with proper protocol in place.

Sad and the parents were not aware of the patting down policy of certain targeted students. The parents are not happy. Given all of the "should have"....I'm hoping that the admin in critical condition will be stabilized and on the way towards healing.

I agree with you whole heartedly. Unfortunately, there are many parents that are dysfunctional in a variety of ways. Virtually, anyone can get pregnant.

@maximillian - That school teacher was interviewed on the Today show yesterday by Savannah Guthrie. She will have shrapnel from the bullet in her body for the rest of her life and is emotionally traumatized. They couldn't talk too much about the case, but said school authorities had been told that day the boy had a gun. I don't understand why nothing was done until she was shot. The 6 year old will not be charged, but is receiving treatment at a facility. A sad story all around.

The District School Board voted unanimously in 2020 to remove the SROs because they "unfairly targeted students of color" and made them feel unsafe and wary of law enforcement. Now the mayor of Denver is saying maybe that was a mistake.

It sounds like parents didn't like the patting down policy either. So I guess students with guns should just be left alone so they won't feel "wary" of authority???

Bonehead decisions made by uninformed school board members. I can think of different words to describe them, but the thread would be poofed. it probably will be, anyway.

A kid who needs to be patted down for weapons every day doesn't belong in a school with other kids and non police personnel.

Classes at East High were canceled for the remainder of the week, DPS Superintendent Alex Marrero said during a news briefing.

Once school resumes, Marrero said, “We will have two armed officers here at East High until the end of the school year. We’re looking forward to expanding that conversation to see how we can reestablish a relationship with Denver police."

Denver’s elected school board voted in 2020 to remove the Denver Police Department’s resource officers from schools.

School board members argued that having police in schools was detrimental to students of color and contributed to the “school-to-prison pipeline.”

@ECBG - The parents weren't mentioned specifically, but the teacher's lawyer, who was sitting next to her during the interview, did say there was an investigation into "others" being charged. Someone has to be responsible and held accountable for this childs' actions.

I'd like to know how the Wild, Wild West was 'turned around', way-way back.

Each time I ask someone, there isn't any answer. Just a blank stare.

Anyway, seems to me that there should be some type of detector / contraption with an alarm at the main door where the students enter.

Of course, I don't know what would happen next....would it be safe for a teacher to remove the gun from the child without being shot?

It's a tough situation.

Wishing and hoping that the two who were injured very quick and complete recoveries.

Wishing all children and teachers and employees safety always.

@Isobel Archer Ridiculous... Perhaps they should consider giving those students not bringing a gun to school a trophy... Those who leave them in their lockers could, you know, get a smaller trophy... Of course, those who don't get a trophy might feel singled out, poor dears...

Asinine... Any kid needing a daily pat down should have been sent off to Juvie... Everybody gets patted down there, so he could, you know, feel included...

I live in the town where that teacher was shot. She recently had another surgery on her hand.The doctors left bullet fragments in her chest? heart? ....can't remember which....to dangerous to remove them. She still has nightmares. So tragic.,she was so young...so senseless.

Since the school board members elected to take out the SRO officers, if I were the teacher, or her husband if she is unable, I would be seeking legal action against a school board that took away the school's protection in this day and time.

Also the parents of the school's children should have the possibility of a class action suit against the school board because their right to be in a safe setting was violated.

I think we're confusing two different shootings.

The school board removed the SROs at the Denver High School where the shooting occurred today.

The teacher shot by a six year old is a different shooting.

However, it seems that we have become much more concerned with making bad actors comfortable than in taking appropriate action - either before they shoot someone -or often even after they do. We'll see what happens with this latest shooter. I suspect we will be getting lots of explanations as to why he's really the victim.
