Beached Dolphins NJ Shore

8 Dolphins Dead After People Try to Rescue Them at the Jersey Shore.

A sad end to the drama on the sand in one Jersey Shore town.

All eight dolphins are dead that were beached in Sea Isle City, New Jersey, Tuesday afternoon, according to the Marine Mammal Stranding Center.

Several dolphins were found stranded at 50th Street Beach.

Nearby beachgoers and residents tried to help them by throwing buckets of water on them and covering them with blankets on the sand.

Earlier the dolphins could be seen moving as the people cared for them.

After many minutes on the sand, crews could be seen loading the dolphins onto the back of pickup trucks. They drove the dolphins a short distance to a box truck, where they transferred the dolphins into the back.

It appeared two other dolphins could be seen further up the beach in an area that was taped off with yellow tape.

According to the stranding center, two of the dolphins died on the beach while the other six were euthanized. All of them were in bad shape.

They are being taken to a state lab and necropsies will be performed Tuesday night.

This is the first time since they can remember that they've had a mass stranding of dolphins this large.

Not just dolphins, whales too! It has to do with all the windmills they put out in the ocean.

Can t wait until first hurricane takes them out.

I saw this on the news....so sad to see. Such majestic creatures they and the whales are. I hope they get to the bottom of this. I'm also concerned about the fish and seafood and what that could come to also.

No proof as of yet. However the strandings are increasing as the NJ offshore wind farms are going up. It could be a coincidence or it could be related. No one knows. From an observational standpoint, there seems to be a correlation. While there has always been an occasional beaching/stranding, the frequency has definitely increased. Are the wind farms to blame? Do the whales and mammals see the towering structures and the shadows they cast and the vibrations they emit as threats and are fleeing them? Is it all a fluke? No one knows the absolute answer just yet, but it can't be dismissed as a possibility and even a likelihood.

Oddly, sealife tends to flourish around other offshore structures. You don't hear that as a positive for offshore windmills though. Is there a difference? Has anyone done an actual study?

The coincidence of windfarms and the increased death of sealife should be enough to stop this 'experiment' until it's absolutely determined what the cause is.

Well since the people who are concerned about windmills are generally not the people who want to eliminate use of fossil fuels and nuclear, a better question is how wind - and maybe solar (without fossil fuels and nuclear) are going to power electricity overall - not to mention electric vehicles.

So terribly sad. I used to swim near dolphins in Rockaway Beach, NYC in the 5o's and 60's.

How horrible man can be to be responsible for harming these beautiful creatures. Makes me sick and disgusted.

Oceans are really very dirty. I think most people don't realize this. I won't eat any fish because of this. Loaded with Mercury. Besides Mercury, there are tons of trash. Untreated wastes. The oceans are shared by all countries. And many of them just don't care. Even Nature can't keep it clean all the time.

If you google how dirty are our oceans, this is what you get.

There are 5.25 trillion pieces of plastic waste estimated to be in our oceans. 269,000 tons float, 4 billion microfibers per km² dwell below the surface. 70% of our debris sinks into the ocean's ecosystem, 15% floats, and 15% lands on our beaches

@IMW Wait for the necropsy. The dolphins may have had a virus or some contagious disease. They may have been natural deaths.

There are no windmill farms off the NJ coast but there is work being done on the ocean floor (mapping) and there is concern the sonar is affecting marine life in some negative way. The whale and dolphin deaths are unusually high. The companies doing the construction haven't monitored what's happening yet, even though they have funding in place for that. Truth is, more information is needed before a decision is made one way or another.
