Does anyone know how you can get an extension for filing taxes? Heard something on the radio you can get an extension till October, but didn't hear anything else. DH has been in hospital and always does our taxes and we don't know when discharge will be. We probably should look for someone to file for us. Any thoughts?

Yes, you can get an extension. Go to IRS.gov and put extension into the search function. Easy to do.

it is only March 2, though. The tax filing deadline this year is April 18. You still have about six weeks to get them done.

@coffee drinker Here is the link. If you file an extension and expect to owe any taxes for the year, you should send the estimated tax payment with the extension form in order to avoid a penalty.

@coffee drinker if you happen to live in the storm impacted areas of CA, GA or AL the tax deadline was extended to Oct 16, 2023.

@coffee drinker @Linmo I filed for an extensions several times during the years I was a snowbird because some of the information I needed to complete the actual form was in the wrong house when I needed it.

But Linmo is right - your taxes are due on April 18, so if there's any chance you owe money, be sure to follow directions and estimate the amount. If you overestimate, you'll get your money back when you actually file.

I hope DH is well enough to talk about all this with you even if he's not up to his usual ability to complete the forms.

ThIs year taxes for 2022 income are due on Tuesday, April 18.

@coffee drinker I would just gather your paperwork and pay an expert to do them. You and your husband don't need the stress. If he is not well, I wouldn't bother him with taxes.

I do taxes for my husband and I, my youngest son, my sister and an elderly friend. It's not fun.

If @coffee drinker and DH get a refund every year, the extension form itself is very simple to fill out. But if they are unsure about whether or not they will owe tax for the year, then it's probably best to have a professional look at it.

Take a look at your last years tax return ( bet your husband has them in a file). Gather what paperwork you can find ( such as w2s and statements from your banks and your broker) and go to a tax professional ( not just H&R Block, ask a friend in similar circumstances for a lead ). He/she will advise you on what to do next. Even though Hubs is hospitalized unless he's comatose he can tell you what you need and where it is. Good Luck! This should be a learning moment for you; even if he does the taxes, you need to know what's going on in the financial aspects of your life.

I always use Turbo Tax. They have professionals on the site that will do your taxes for you. They have always been accurate. They guarantee your return and if a problem is found they will refund your money. Just a suggestion.
