Celebrities “In Person”

Of course celebrities have their up and down days. @Carmie 's post in @Jordan2 's thread about John Travolta's birthday showed me a different side of him.

After reading other posts I know some we THINK are really nice are not really.

So I thought we could post our "celebrity interactions." LOL!

Jill Whelan (The Love Boat) - We have a mutual friend. I didn't know that until shortly before she moved! She's a sweet person who didn't act like a diva at all. Other than when my friend introduced us, we didn't talk about her career at all. We talked about our kids!

Mel Gibson - My friend was pushing her stroller when she ran into him coming the other way. She said he's shorter than what she expected! He was really nice, asking about her baby and chatting a while before going on his way.

Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill - They filmed at DS' university when DS was just starting there. DS was hired as an extra, and is in the movie 5 times. He said Channing was really nice, often staying after to talk with the kids until his manager pulled him away. Jonah was the opposite. They were told not to look him in the eye and not to get in his way. He didn't interact with the kids at all. Word got around, and he "sponsored" an exclusive showing of one of his other movies- but he didn't show up.

Joachim Phoenix - We know the former owner of a restaurant he frequented when he was filming on location. Everyone said he's one of the nicest men you will ever meet.

Taylor Swift - One of DS' good friend's father catered her concert, and because DS' friend was a teenage girl at the time she got to help! She said Taylor was demanding, wanting only certain foods, and sending them back if she didn't like the way they looked. She also said she screamed at her staff a lot, and she was not very nice to DS' friend, never thanking her for anything.

My husband once had to drive Hulk Hogan from the airport to Hershey Arena. He said he was a joy to be around. Really down to earth with a great sense of humor.

He also got to escort George H. Bush from the airport

(with the secret service and state troopers) when he was Vice President. He was very nice and friendly. He posed for pictures and my DH was sent one by his staff. My husband looks so short standing next to George.

My guess would be some people famous or not when having a bad day act out and others are just entitled and rude all of the time.

I have read so many stories about Keanu Reeves and his kindness to strangers. He is a stand up guy, IMO

Adding: My husband and oldest son met Shaquille O' Neal in Wash DC honoring fallen police officers. They both said he is really a nice guy and a pleasure to be around.

Aside from local news reporters, I can think of two that I met.

Seth Green lived in my small Philly neighborhood when he wss a boy. I knew his parents before they were divorced. Knew his father only to waive and say Hi. His mom and I had more of a friendship. My nephew went to school with him. Seth was a nice kid until he was in a movie The Hotel New Hampshire. He was only about 10 at the time and I guess the early attention got to him and he became loud and demanding. Course, he was a child, so no ill will toward him. I have no idea what he is like as an adult.

Second, and I consider myself blessed to have met him, was Mohammed Ali. The nicest, modest, kindest person. When he lived in my city for a short time, kids would ride bikes near his house to catch a glimpse. He most times would come outside and spoke a little bit and spent a little time with all of us. He was The Greatest.

@PhilaLady1 I used to live in Cherry Hill when Mohammed Ali had a house there in the early 1970s. I can remember driving by several times but never saw him. I heard he was nice.

A Q celebrity....Mally lives in my town. I've seen her a few times around town. I never went up to her but my friend did and went up to say hello. She wasn't friendly at all and preferred to keep a low profile.

Another time she was in Blue Mercury with all of the sales associates surrounding her. I needed to make a purchase and asked the SA if that was Mally. She was "on" playing up to the group surrounding her. She was looking for hair products.

In the earlier '80s, when she was making a movie in CT, Valerie Bertinelli made an appearance at Milford Jai-Alai. My friends who worked there told me how nice and friendly she was.

Way back in the 1980's DH and I were in NYC and ran into Richard Simmons in a bookstore. He was really sweet and friendly.

DH helped with a charity Clay Aiken from American Idol had and he was nice, not overly friendly, but professional.

In or around 2000, Don Henley of the Eagles did a solo tour and dh and I traveled to Milwaukee for a concert and met him in the airport on the way home. He was so nice in taking time to talk to us. I was a babbling idiot, because I was totally starstruck. That year we went to lots of his concerts and after a show in Tunica, MS, a bunch of us were outside and were able to go on the tourbus and get stuff signed, he was always extremely gracious.

When I was 18 working at JC Penney's the store had some kind of promotional thing with Dr. Pepper. David Naughton was the face of Dr. Pepper and his movie American Werewolf in London had just come out. He was at the store for hours and asked me to have dinner with him that night. I said thanks but no thanks. My long term boyfriend was the son of the General Manager of the store. David's career did not go anywhere, but it was nice to be asked.

I have an acquaintence who hand makes artist teddy bears and has received numerous awards for them. She is very down to earth.

She attended some sort of show with displaying her bears and back in the day when Marie Osmond sold her dolls, she ran into her there. She said she attempted to talk to her and Marie would have nothing to do with her. She said she was surprised Marie could breathe because her nose was so high up in the air, there would be very little O2.

My son works at the Disney sports complex. He was working at a college basketball tournament there a few years ago. Bill Murray was there supporting his son who was one of the coaches. My son was asked to drive Bill Murray in a golf cart to his (Bill's) car. My son said that Bill stuck out his hand to shake my son's hand and said, "Hello, I'm Bill Murray." My son was thinking, "LOL, like I did not know who you were." Anyway, he said Bill was very nice and was asking my son about himself. My son could not ask for a selfie with him - that is an immediate cause to be fired at Disney. But it was a thrill for my son.

I used to go to NYC when I was in my early twenties (this would be in the 70"s) and I once ran into Woody Allen on the street. Next thing I know, there's ****** Cavett. I have a friend who's claim to fame is he was at a party in NYC that was attended by Jim Morrison.

@HisElk1 Wow, I had total different experiences with Marie Osmond. We have met her a few times. The first time was when she was a teen. My cousin and I were at the pool at the Tropicana and the staff said we were not suppose to approach Marie. So, we did not, but, she came up to us. She was super friendly and she talked to us for quite some time and told us she was sorry the staff told us not to approach her. She said that was the Tropicana's policy, not the Osmonds.

Throughout the years we have run into her 3 other times. She was always warm, open and friendly. She never snubbed anyone in our presence or held her nose up in the air.

@HisElk1 That kind of surprises me, but I guess it shouldn't. You can put on a "show" and be as sweet as ever, but when you are not on air or on stage, it could be a different story.

I have a cousin that is a celebrity. I've met many and most have actually acted just like normal regular people. The ones that stood out are:

Henry Winkler and wife Stacey are so kind and nice and generous. They have always been favorites. Very down to earth.

Robin Williams and his wife Susan. He was far more serious than you would expect and was very nice.

Kay Lenz (David Cassidy's ex) was so funny. And she is very creative, she sewed these amazing beads on undergarments for a bride to be at the shower.

Garth Brooks, so sincere and will remember your name even if it's been a couple years since he saw you last. Another one that has a great memory, I never met him but my cousin new him well and said Jay Leno had an amazing memory. He remembered names as well as the spouses name and the children's name.

Lorna Luft (Judy Garlands daughter) was like any other mom. In fact, I sat and visited with her for hours and we talked about our kids and life and I didn't even know who she was until my cousin said, do you know who you have been talking to?

I won't say anything negative, like I stated, most are friendly and act just like your next door neighbor.

Life has put me in the path of many celebrities. My first was Betty White. We both made an appearance on a local TV show together. She was just as you would imagine and a genuinely friendly person.

I saw Pamela Anderson at an Apparel show in Las Vegas. She was promoting her line of clothing. Most celebrities stand around and greet buyers. Pamela was helping the customers write orders. She had armloads of heavy items and walked back and forth to the display. She explained each item and showed its features. I was very impressed with her friendliness, knowledge, and work ethic.

My son attended elementary school with Neil Patrick Harris. We knew then he was special. I went on an out of town field trip with them. He entertained the entire bus with his banter. He was funny, respectful, and a joy to be around on every occasion our paths crossed.

Dale Robertson appeared in many TV shows and movies in the 50's, 60's, and 70's. Our favorite was "Tales of Wells Fargo." He spent an afternoon with my husband and I. His voice was mesmerizing. He was extremely charming and made us feel like long time friends.

We helped host Linda Blair one weekend. She is an animal lover and was attending a horse event. She was alone and the host asked if we would like to have her join us at our table. She was just a regular, down to earth person. I kept trying to equate this lovely woman with the little girl whose head was spinning around in "The Exorcist." That is why they are called actors. Who they are and who they portray are entirely different.

I worked for a well-known politician in Los Angeles, and there were plenty of "celebrities" dropping by. I did NOT interact with them.

I've met many celebrities in Philly, NYC, and at the Jersey shore.

Some of my favorites:

Bruce Springsteen - one of the nicest and most genuine celebrities I ever met. Very much a gentleman. His wife is also a sweetheart.

Andy Warhol - I met him at the Hard Rock that used to be on W 57th in NYC. He was there with Mariel Hemmingway. He was nice and very interesting. Her, not so much.

Steve Perry - I was a teen attending one of his first concerts with Journey at the Tower in Upper Darby PA. He was super nice. I was with my boyfriend at the time who had backstage passes and we met all of the guys in Journey and the (little known then)guys from Van Halen. Van Halen opened for Montrose and Journey. The Van Halen guys were rowdy. (That's all I will say about them).

Lou Reed - I was in Pittsburgh attending a Flyers/Penguins game and he was staying at the same hotel. Met him while on the elevator. Another nice guy.

So many others, but more recent, Melissa Gorga from Real Housewives of NJ. Met her on the Boardwalk in Seaside Heights NJ. She is sweet and very talkative.

This was a long time ago. But my mom was the escrow officer at a rather "uptown" branch of B of A. She handled an escrow for Kareem Abdul Jabar. His agent , real estate person and he took her to see the home he was buying.

She said it was wonderful but she said HE was so handsome and such a perfect gentleman with a nice sense of humor. It was a huge thrill for her. She said she wouldn't dream of asking for his autograph as she was handling buisness for him.

My "mother" was very ambivalent about non-whites so I was amazed but glad to hear her praise him so.

My cousin and I were eating at a barbecue restaurant in Aspen, Colorado when Steven Tyler with Aerosmith came in with an entourage. I was probably the only person there who didn't know who he was but I could tell by his appearance that he was an entertainer. My cousin clued me in. He sat so close, I could have reached out and touched him.

After he ate, he was most gracious in visiting other diners in the room, chatting and even posing with them for photos. He seemed like a really nice person.

I guess they're very accustomed to celebrities in Aspen because nobody approached him or bothered him at his table.
