The New Hampshire Summit of Mt. Washington broke a new temperature windchill record for the U.S with -108°F on Friday. There is an observatory up there.

Wow! I'm not surprised though. The top of Mt. Washington also has the highest wind recorded in the US, 231 mph. I remember seeing the sign at the top. I've climbed it twice and one of the things I remember most is that the observatory is chained to the ground with very thick chains. I've never seen chain so thick. Wouldn't want to work there...

Actually yes. The arctic air mass has become unstable b/c of warming regions within it. Normally the arctic air mass sits on top of the northern hemisphere like a cap which is kept there by a stream of upper-atmospheric wind called the jetstream. The jetstream act like a fence which keeps the cold air from coming down to lower latitudes. But since there has been warmer air moving into the otherwise colder regions, the arctic air mass is starting to wobble and that causes it to dip up and down in a whiplash sort of fashion. A yo-yo effect of extreme high and low temps will cycle endlessly until the arctic air mass becomes stable. But it might not be doing that any time soon b/c of the climate change.

I visited Mt Washington many years ago. Rode to the top via the cog train. It was October of that year, so the temps hadn't gotten quite that cold! However, I do recall that the lightly quilted jacket I wore wasn't quite warm enough, even in October

I was there in the summer month and had to put a coat on. Also if you made the climb up the very steep mountain it was spooky, however my car got a sticker when we came back down , that it had climb the mountain. If I go again I would take the train up.

I was there many years ago ....back in the mid 1970s with my old boyfriend. We drove up and it was scary then. I couldn't imagine driving that road today (even in summer!). As I've gotten older, I'm more nervous about certain things.
