Do your feet hurt?

Mine do - regularly. Is this just a natural part of aging? I'm 61 and I find myself wearing my ASICS athletic shoes and Birkenstocks about 95% of the time. Earlier this week, I had to be at an event at my office ( concrete floors!) and I wore flat dress shoes. At the end of the day, I thought I was going to die! My feet were killing me! I'm just curious if everyone (maybe everyone over 60) has painful feet?

As we age, our feet lose the fat pad on the bottoms of our feet...fat pad atrophy. It's a normal part of aging. We need to wear shoes with cushion to make up for the loss of the natural fat pad cushion we had when we were younger.

@Goldengate8361 If your feet hurt so badly, you may have arthritis in your feet. My mom had it and could hardly walk at times. She wore leather athletic style shoes with custom orthotics. She could never have worn Birkenstocks or flats. You probably need to visit a shoe store that specializes in fitting shoes on problem feet.

Just my luck, more than enough fat everywhere but the bottom of my feet.

What exactly hurts on or in your feet? Do you have bunions, corns, need arch supports, shoes too small, not good quality or don't fit well? Low quality shoes don't often provide proper support for the foot even though they have tons of spongy stuff on the inside.

If athletic shoes and Birkenstocks don't bother you, I'd look at the other shoes you are wearing that are causing the pain.

@Foxxee I don't have bunions, corns, hammer toes, or plantar fasciitis. I think @Kachina624 might be right....probably early stages of arthritis in my feet, which is unfortunate since very little can actually help that. I think I have plenty of good sized cushy shoes...but they still hurt.

Yes. 99.9% sure I've developed plantar fasciitis in my left foot. Ow. Also my feet are skinny and never had much tissue volume ever. So now ot feels like I'm walking on bones.

No but I have had to be aware since I was 17 that Type 1 diabetics must take care of their feet. I see a podiatrist every few years and I was told I have a high arch so I buy shoes that fit impeccably. My podiatrist told me it is a myth that I can only wear flat shoes or expensive shoes. The only prerequisite is that leather breathes better so it is a better choice.

I also find my weight determines how my shoes fit. If I eat a lot of salt, my shoes will be uncomfortable. So I eliminated the salt shaker. Problem solved.

I suggest you try on different brands of shoes and see what "last" fits your feet. Also see a podiatrist and see if something else could be contributing to your discomfort.

My toes hurt at night with the pressure of the bed covers. Since I have severe arthritis in my hands, I figure it's in my feet, too.

@SilleeMee is right about the fat pads on our feet.

Some people get fillers injected into the bottoms of their feet to give them back the cushion. Some people do that so they can wear shoes of their choice and not have to wear othotics or sneakers all the time.

@Goldengate8361 If you'd visit a rheumatologist, he might prescribe some medication which could help if he decides that is indeed the priblem. Nice, softly cushioned, supportive shoes help a lot. No Skechers.

@smoochy I also have super narrow feet, so I understand your delimma. It's even harder for folks like us with very narrow feet to find cushy shoes ( at any price ). Plantar fasciitis is so painful.... I've had that before but, fortunately, that's not a current issue for me. Hope yours heals soon.

@smoochy just time. I hate to tell you that....I tried the recommended stretches, exercises, and even a few devices that I bought on Amazon. Did nothing. I took advil and wore Birkenstocks - as I recall.

No they don't hurt but I wear super cushiony shoes! I'm 61 too, and I know I have lost some of the cushion fat pads on the bottom of my feet, so I compensate.

@SilleeMee That sounds painful! but also potentially amazing. I think I saw something similar to that on one of those reality tv shows featuring foot doctors and foot issues. Someone kept getting huge, thick, deep, hard calluses, and after they were sufficiently shaved the doctor injected something into her feet to add natural padding. That person found it very painful! ugh. I could probably use that. anyway, I was very interested in that episode as I make calluses, which can be painful on their own. Very annoying problem - high maintenance.

@smoochy I had it too. The doctor gave me a prescription cream to rub on the whole area a couple/few times a day. He gave me one of those boots to stretch me that I was to wear all night and often during the day.I can't remember what else I did, if there was something else.

@Goldengate8361 Sorry for your feet problem, I don't have too much of a foot problem but have found that if I have to stand for long periods of time my feet will hurt. I have found that flats are the worst for me, I always need a little heel or a wedge with a soft comfort insole. Perhaps try that or buy a insole for even your flat shoes and see if that will give you some comfort and relief. I wish you well.

@Goldengate8361 Do you feel hurt or do they ache? Wonder if one of those shiastu foot massages might help you? Or try some foot rubs? Maybe roll your feet over a ball? It could help with circulation, etc., but maybe that's not what you need. Personally, I always love a foot rub or anything close to it Hope your feet feel better soon.
