Equifax data beach settlement check

More than 2 years ago, quite a bit more than 2 years ago, while my husband was still alive, we were informed (have no idea how, it's been quite awhile) that there was a class action suit because of an Equifax data breach.

So, I filed a claim for each of us, cause why not. And that was the end of that. A year ago I shredded the paperwork I had because I never heard anything further.

My postal informed delivery thing this morning showed that I had 2 pieces of mail coming from the settlement. I thought oh no, how will I cash my husband's check? He is deceased and his estate has been closed. All morning when I was running errands that was on my mind a little. I mean not worried certainly, just in my mind.

Well, no problem. I just got home, got the mail and each of us received a check for $5.21. So this will be easy. I will cash mine and shred his. His estate is closed, his estate bank account is closed and he is not on my accounts any longer so no way to cash it.

Only the attorneys get rich on class-action lawsuits.

My mom gets a dividend check every year from an electric co-op they used when I was growing up. The check is in my dad's name and she deposits it into her account and has never had an issue. My dad has been dead for 30 years.

I got the same $5.21 check, lol.

There's a possibility you might just be able to deposit it. I received a few checks after my dad passed and everything was closed. I just signed the back and deposited online with no issue.

Same here! At one time, the proposed settlement was supposed to be about $120 per person. I was so excited when I saw that I had a PayPal deposit from the settlement, but underwhelmed when I saw the whopping $5.21. 🙄

PS...take your husband's check to the bank to see if they would deposit it in your account. The worst that can happen is that they'll tell you that they can't. You might as well have that $5 as to not. Heck...that would buy a dozen eggs! 🥚😆

I'd endorse the check with my name and deposit without asking. I bet nothing is ever said or noticed.

Kachina is 100% correct, the attorney's got the difference of the $120 @Ainhisg you expected to receive.

I can't believe that I received a settlement check. I had been informed -- seems like about a year ago -- that I needed to provide more info or my claim would be denied. It didn't seem worth it to me to figure out the info they were requesting so I never responded and never expected to hear anything more.

I just received a $14.47 settlement check. Guess I can purchase some organic eggs, LOL.

Such a small amount of income would not affect his estate. Hopefully the bank will cash it.
