Anybody get a EDD B of A debit card in the mail?

I did and it told me to activate the card as I had $2600 dollars in it that was mine. I am long retired and don't have any unemployment money owed me. I never filed for unemployment all the years I worked. So i shredded the card and threw away the letter. This morning I got a text telling me that I hadn't activated card and gave me a link to do so. Anybody else experience this?

No but if I did I would call my bank to verify. Do you bank with BOA?

No. There's a video on utube about BOA EDD card fraud from two years ago.

@mspatmac I have a credit card through them but not any other accounts.

As I thought about the card I got in the mail, it occurred to me that if that was a scam it would be mail fraud which is a serious offense and easy to trace? When I got the text this morning the whole thing just became more curious. Of course I didn't click on the texted link.

If this was a debit card issued by your state's unemployment agency, call them. You might be surprised to know someone applied for unemployment in your name.

Your "earnings" might be reported as a gig or 1099 income.

@cody2You could contact the EDD to verify and if it is valid, order a replacement card.

@cody2 - Did you question how someone had both your address (mail) and your phone number (text)?

I certainly would be reporting this to find out exactly what was going on.

I don't know what EDD is referring to, but it seems odd that you'd be receiving a BOA debit card, plus a follow-up text. Anything like this should be reported, in case it's a serious fraud, so that it can be investigated.

You also don't mention the time lapse between the letter and the text. A shame you destroyed the card and letter without verifying it first, as they could've been important evidence.

@Maggie Nolia Seems I remember about that time, people on the NextDoor app reporting getting this things by the bucket-full.

@Linmo Just wanted to follow up with you. I called the number on your link. I got a very knowledgeable and helpful rep who settled this matter for me. First of all, she had no record under my SS number that I was due any amount from EDD. She also said that the notice they DO send with a real card does not state the amount owed you. AND they NEVER follow up with a text that has a link. If a person doesn't activate their real card it is up to the person to contact THEM. She also said that fraud regarding government cards is rampant and profitable for the bad guys. So a huge thanks for your help! And again, I appreciate all the others who took the time to reply.

Not to me. I ain't heard a word about another stimulus check. Finally, I don't live in California. States do different things, but there is no new stimulus money coming from the Feds as far as I know @Linmo .

@gertrudecloset Here in CA, we recently had what originally started out as a gas tax rebate and then turned into a middle class rebate due to a state government surplus. We received ours back in November, but others are just receiving it now.

@Linmo lucky for y'all. But $2600 dollars worth? Clearly it was fraud. Would it have come from the Department of Unemployment services or what ever agency is involved that sent the card? Wouldn't any gifts from the California gubmint, have come from their Treasury Department?

@gertrudecloset It started out that you would get so much for every registered car you had and then it changed to be based on income and number of dependants. Those of us who received a refund and filed taxes online last year had it automatically deposited into our accounts. Others were sent a debit card. Those who were mailed debit cards are just receiving them now. I would assume that the debit cards would come from the Franchise Tax Board and not the EDD, but you never know.

Yanno, I don't really care @Linmo . This instance has proven to be fraud.

In California, these cards are legit from the state. Maybe there are fraudulent cards out there, so if concerned, take card to the bank and ask a banker. If it is ok, activate and use it to spend or get cash from the bank. Distribution of cards should end this month, January.
