Colorado Library Shuts Down Due to Meth Contamination

Methamphetamine was reportedly being smoked in the building's restrooms.

So much methamphetamine was found in the air ducts of a Colorado library that it had to temporarily shut down. The city of Boulder says that after two library employees got sick, "higher than acceptable" levels of meth were found in the air ducts of the Boulder Public Library's public bathrooms, causing the library to close on Dec. 20 for further environmental testing.

It will be gradually reopened starting Wednesday, but will not return to full capacity until, tentatively, Jan. 9. The city plans to review the planned Jan. 9 opening and announce any adjustments on Jan. 6.

The city says, "It is not yet clear if, and when, public restrooms will be brought back." Testing also found "a limited amount of surface contamination in a few discrete locations in highly trafficked seating areas in the south portion of the building," the city says.

"Professional remediation" is underway on the bathrooms and the affected seating areas, and officials say the furniture in the seating areas may be changed to something that can be cleaned regularly. The full remediation process could take weeks.

“This is truly a sad situation and represents the impact of a widespread epidemic in our country,” says the library director.

“The city is consulting with Boulder County Public Health officials and will take all steps necessary to prioritize safety. We are committed to transparency and appropriate remediation.” The two employees were medically cleared, and officials say there is no ongoing health threat to the public.

Very sad indeed, however, in a public place like a library, I expect a bathroom to be made available. (Not meaning during this incident, but long term)

Very sad hearing about drug use in so many public places.

It's not just libraries. It's any building with a bathroom that's open to the public.

The Security officers at the hospital where I work are constantly pulling patients out of the bathrooms for smoking meth and fentanyl.

I do not know enough about this subject to agree or disagree with your statement. I will say that I believe that a great amount must be made in the U.S. since I cannot even purchase my over the counter allergy medicine that has the "D" for decongestant, without providing my drivers license, Because something in it is used to help make methamphetamine.

Yes, I'm in the same boat. The price has also gone up, too. What sold for around $6 is now $18 plus for generic. I paid around $6.00 for 20 tablets of Drixorral years ago. No longer sold in the U.S. A few weeks after the new ruling, all those types of allergy meds went way up in price.

While imeth is still being made in the U.S., it's more difficult getting the ingredients here. The article said "increasingly" coming across the border.

All drugs are increasingly coming into the country. Fentanyl shipped from China.

I got sick of the whole routine. So what I do is that I purchase regular allergy meds from Costco 365 tabs of the Kirkland Brand of Benadryl which I take every night. I tend to get more congested in the spring time, so I always have a package of Claritan "D" available for when I feel the congestion coming. I will take it for a few days to clear up then return to my Benadryl.

The Kirkland brand is very reasonably priced. The other meds from the drug stores have drastically increased in price and you cannot even purchase a decent quantity.

Thanks for the tip. Will give it a try, but Benedryl puts me to sleep. I like Zyrtec, so I'll use that plus have D on hand when needed. Sounds good.

What a shame. Aren't most drugs legal in Colorado? The new meth is much stronger and lethal than the one that was around a few years ago. The taxpayers should not be deprived of using the library they are paying for due to knuckleheads using drugs there.

Maybe they need to leave them locked where you have to ask for the key. That could stop some of it? It has to be kids. I would think you could tell by looking at them which ones are high?

I don't have any suggestions on how to stop it.

What's your suggestion. I don't think there is anything that keep the stuff from coming over the Border? If they can't get across they just go over or under?

My bff is a librarian. A lot of homeless hang out in the library during the day. Especially when it's freezing cold or broiling hot. This is not new. She was used to having to report syringes and rubber tubing. Now it's a different drug.

All illicit drugs that are used in the U.S. come from some other country. This has always been true. First with Heroin coming from Asia during the Viet Nam War, Now with synthetic fentanyl coming in from all over.

The thing about Fentanyl is that if big pharma didn't create it, there would be no synthetic one. Fentanyl is today's drug problem.
