I donated some items to a local homeless shelter years ago. I still get solicitation letters from them even though I moved out of the area. You'd think they'd notice the address the letter is going to is out of state.

I donated to the local food bank and was put on the mailing list for their annual funding letter. I was stunned to see how much they were spending for a fancy dinner for donors.

Needless to say, this has just reiterated why I donate to an organization with no overhead, that helps people worldwide and doesn't waste the money on soliciting or fancy dinners.

Greetings, fellow shopper and posters!

I would like to give cash donations on behalf of the victims of the Ukraine war, and homeless people in the US. I'd especially appreciatie it if you can confirm if they are accredited--I've learned the hard way NOT to give to organizations that suck up something like 65%of the money and disbursing something like only 30%. (If you can't, I can check it myself.)

Thanks in advance for any information you can share

Charity Navigator will help you see where your money is going when you give to a charitable organization; it is a legitimate charity-ranking company and you can trust its information. Go to their website and you can pull up the 990 of the organization to see where the money goes.Make sure your charity is a 501c3...if not, you cannot take a deduction for your contribution.

I do not give to a number of charities because they pay their CEO way too much money or have a high percentage of "administrative" costs.

The best places to donate for Ukraine and the homeless/poor, IMO, are Catholic Charities and World Central Kitchen. You can also check locally for organizations that help refugees, the poor, homeless, elderly, etc.

CHARITY NAVIGATOR is a thumbs up for me too....one local animal shelters wonders why they dont get as many donations as other animal charitable organizations....perhaps its because Charity Navigator shows the Humane Society pays her $200,000 a year SMH....People donate where the majority of donations goes to the cats and dogs!
