She was supposed to go home after cancer treatments right before Christmas, but she slipped into a coma.I wanted to call her before, but knew I would cry like I did when I called both her husband and sister. So I told myself I would wish her Merry Christmas trying to be strong.I was devasted and cried often, because the same thing happened 19 years ago with my uncle, her brother. My mom was at my house and wanted to wish him happy birthday.I told her she could call him when she went back home.He was only 60, apparently healthy and died suddently of natural causes 3 days later.A couple of days before Christmas I was at work and felt her presence behind me.I felt she was happy she could visit me.Recently her husband didn't want to take her to the beach resort where they have a summer house. That's where my parents live and we see each other every summer. She told him she was going to drive the long distance by herself if she had to just to see me.He took her of course and we had a great time at the beach.Well since her "visit"I feel like I just spent time with her even if I haven't seen her in months.By the way,all my relatives live back in Italy near Venice.I know that most of you don't believe me.She is only 66,but her cancer came back after 20 years.

I believe you. There are many people who have experiences like yours. I cannot explain them, but I don't disbelieve them.

The last line in your post really hit home. The other day at work, a co-worker and I were having a discussion about whether or not cancer ever really leaves your body once it has been there. My mother and I had a discussion about that less than 24 hours ago.

We talked about the fact that my aunt had breast cancer, and went 18 years "cancer-free." Then she wound up with spinal cancer. The cells from her spinal cancer were compared to the cells taken from her breast tissue; they were of the same source...it wasn't a different cancer, it was the same one that had been there 18 years before.

People say that once you are "cancer-free" for 5 years, you are out of the woods...but I don't believe that. I believe that people can help themselves by being diligent about maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and that is their best chance for not succumbing to cancer cells that may be "hiding." In other words, doing a lot of learning to find out what substances feed cancer cells and what substances help to starve/hamper them...and changing your lifestyle.

I've heard too many stories where cancer comes back, years later.

The good news, I believe, is that there are ways of fighting cancer that most lay people aren't aware of, or don't take seriously. For most Americans it would require a complete overhaul of your diet, the personal care products you use, the products you use to clean your home, etc. I'm sure many people will tell me I'm full of it, but I've spent many, many hours looking into information about how the typical, modern American lifestyle differs from some other places in the world and from what the American lifestyle used to be...and the consequences we now face because of it. I read and hear of "miracle cases" where people survive for long periods of time despite the grimmest of odds, and most of those people have turned their lives upside-down for their "miracles."

One of the things that drove home the importance of diet and lifestyle was the list of things my father was instructed not to ingest during chemo and radiation. They were all antioxidant-loaded whole foods, and supplements. His treatments are directed at the fastest growing cells in his body, aka--the cancer...(but his hair, skin and nails are also affected because of how fast they grow, and that is why hair falls out, nails become brittle and skin gets dry and lesions can form). Antioxidants are powerful enough to slow down the growth of cancer cells, and that is why doctors want you to stay away from antioxidants during treatment; they want the cancer to continue to "grow" in order for the treatments to target it and kill it.

It's 4am, so I'm not sure everything I typed above makes what I mean to say apparent...but I'll wait for the pile-on and engage later.

This has happened to me and to other family members and friends.

Last week it happened to my sister. One of her dear friends died and my sister and her other friends took a hike around a lake and had a picnic as they often did together. There is a boulder by the lake were they would often stop to rest. when they passed the rock my sister said her friend was there watching everyone walk by.

Good morning to all!

very interesting thread and I am one who is a big believer of what the OP wrote. Beautiful! Also I enjoyed reading the other posts well.

I was a little girl when my Mom passed, just 11. Each morning when my Dad left we went to the window, waving at him. But... I always made a deroute first, i went by the kitchen, to get some cookies first. I always felt My Mom watching me doing this and giggling about it. She herself came from a huge family 11 children in total, and she and her sister were also somewhat mischavous. I still look back at those times, and just know she was really there, watching my sister and me. It was very comforting. Don't know whether I ever told my Dad about it.

Have a good day everybody.

Hugs,

Magenta

Some of my friends who have finally died of cancer found it came back after many years; 20 is not at all unreasonable. I have heard there is still something in the system that stays, even after one if pronounced cancer free. Maybe a person with a medical background could clarify this information.

The only time loved ones or friends appear to me are in dreams and that is quite frequent and very real.

It was contained and very early, however the oncologist I saw, a friend in fact, wanted me to take an extensive chemo treatment. He said that just in case there were any stray cells this would get them.

I strongly believe if you have cancer once, you will get it again. When, it seems to vary. It is not necessarily the same kind of cancer either. A younger lady I know had breast cancer thirteen years ago, and just finished about thirty five radiation treatments for a very rare cancer, a sarcoma of the groin.

I hate to even speculate on it, since my DH had another very rare cancer about three years ago, and I sure hope her never gets another kind.

So sorry to get offtrack here.

After my grandfather died many years ago, I had dreams about him very often. But then I had one dream in which I told him that I loved him. I think that's why he was visiting me in my dreams. I never had another dream about him again, and I felt a strong sense of relief after that.

My aunt passed 8years ago. She and I were extremely close since she came into the family when I was 12. Many times she has made her presence known to me while I am awake. Once when I was very down after she passed I looked out on my patio and there was 1 huge rhododendron bloom mid-November (it was my first birthday without her and her telephoning me to sing "happy birthday"). These flowers are done blooming midsummer here in PA. Another time as I was dusting the music box she gave me, I picked it up and it played the ENTIRE song--not just a few notes. I never wound it before. So many other significant and personal occurrences I. The love shared doesn't die when the physical body passes on. HTH.
