Greetings from the Deep South!

We have burst pipes all over the place and power outages.

Drove into work and found an icy parking lot and lots of work trucks. Pipe burst at this location and another one. They are currently gutting the downstairs building.

The neighborhood surrounding us has burst pipes everywhere. Our phone coverage is spotty at best. And we've had a lot of house fires because it just doesn't get this cold around here.

My boss has no power or heat at his personal home. The heating people won't even come out because they have so many calls due to the systems not handling the frigid weather.

Oh and we might get a dusting of snow later today into tonight but it will be in the 60s by New Years.

Oh, @Laura14 , so sorry for all that meyhem! We got by very well here in the northeast. But I was filling utensils for extra water to have on hand due to our strong winds.

Hope things settle out and gets back to normal soon!!

So far, we're personally good at our home. We're from Jersey so we turned everything off last week. Fingers crossed we keep on keeping on.

That sounds terrible! Here in NOLA most know to wrap/insulate any exposed pipes outside and keep a thin stream of water running from faucets indoors. Just doing that usually prevents the kind of damage you're describing.

Wasn't the media describing beforehand what people should do to prevent broken pipes? It was all over our news for days before the freezing weather arrived.

ETA Where in the deep south are you?

@shoesnbags I live in Georgia. The same state where they told people to go to work a few years ago because the snow storm coming wasn't that bad. Everyone ended up spending the night on I-85 and I-75 and I-285 in their cars for their trouble because GA doesn't have the equipment or experience necessary to prep and clear the roads.

I've been down here long enough to know they really don't know what to do with actual winter weather including prep and clean up. They just don't get it often enough to keep up or realize what it actually can do so I use my own judgement.

I remember being in college in Louisiana and we got a freak ice storm. I overheard my friend telling her roommate to boil water and throw it on her iced up windshield. Those of us in cold weather states know exactly what was going to happen if she did that even though to them it made common sense.

Luckily I got her to call her back and disaster averted. If you don't know, you don't know and that's the problem around here.

I admit, I'm totally ignorant regarding the Deep South, (other than a few short "work stints" to Huntsville, ALA, in *summer!* whew! Was so hot there, my eyelashes stuck to my "above eye" area, was sooo hot, humid there!)

I had NO idea the Deep South had such Cold. ??Well, maybe all the burst pipes, etc ARE because it's usually not so cold there??

Did you read about all the many deaths in snow, in say Buffalo, NY, as well as other areas? Where they're used to Snow!! This is a "biggie" for many!

Hope you're able to stay safe, & any repairs are minimal, & inexpensive. How's that for a BIG wish! @Laura14

@Laura14 . I thought that you might be in my area. I am in Cherokee County. I left to go to the grocery store on Christmas Eve and It was 5 degrees! One of my neighbors left her irrigation system on and her driveway and front lawn were a sea of ice.

Speaking of the great Atlanta snowmageddon of 2014, if anyone wants to see what happens in deep south when a snow storm blows in without much warning just google 2014 Atlanta snowmageddon and you will see pictures of the interstates around Atlanta. When the snow started falling all the schools, government offices and businesses closed and everyone got on the roads at the same time. Atlanta traffic is horrendous under the best of circumstances but throw in freezing snow and it became gridlock. Both of my daughters were caught in that mess and one didn't get home until the next day.

@Laura14 and @50Mickey I'm in Gwinnett County and so far everything is quiet. It's about 42 degrees but I love the cold weather. Was out a few days ago when it was about 17. My entire Georgia family decided to go to the Caribbean for Christmas vacation (3weeks). Every day they send me videos of 80 and 90 degrees and enjoying themselves on different beaches.

@50Mickey oh yea I remember that snow storm. I remember we were looking out the window waiting for the snow plows to come through and we looked and waited and nothing happened. At that time we lived in a subdivision with about 20 houses one way in one way out, so I thought maybe that's why they though we didn't need them.

Lived in NY and NJ for years and you would hear the snow plows and trucks doing their job.

By afternoon I called one of my sisters and asked about the snow plows and she started laughing. Then she said you would be waiting forever and ever. That was the first and last snowstorm I've seen in my area So many people were stuck on the highway. That was so sad.

@50Mickey Gwinnett! For the first time since I moved here, I needed a scarf. I felt frostbite developing on Friday am when I walked from the parking lot into work. I've never felt weather like this around here. It's beyond abnormal.

@Sage04 I'm from Jersey and I did the same thing? I kept asking where the snow plows were and the salt? I thought they were kidding when they didn't have an answer.

@Laura14 - same over here in East Cobb. I don't want to ever compare us to any other states that get this weather more frequently, but it has been horrible in our area, hasn't it. The temps and like you said, broken pipes everywhere and over a holiday weekend, which continues today. The never ending holiday. And now, maybe a little snow. Of course.

I have been fortunate so far. Biggest thing for me (so far) is that the door on my all glass shower won't close. It's like the glass expanded or something. I tried to leave a message with the installing company on Saturday. Voice mail wasn't taking messages. They're closed again today but this time, I was able to leave a voice mail. The one year warranty on my shower door expires on the 30th so I wanted to make sure to get my message in to them.

I count myself very fortunate but this has been something.

@50Mickey - and some of us long time Atlantans remember the ice storm of January 1973. I was in high school. We lived in Roswell. We lost power for 7 days. No one could go anywhere. We ran out of firewood and started burning trash. And then, snow jam 1982. Horrible.

It's not fair to compare GA to others. I was really upset with the jokes after Snowmageddon since I'd like Jersey and the rest of them to see how well they do without the equipment they have on standby.

Like I said, it's ignorance of winter weather down here but it's ignorance everyone comes by very honestly and for good reason.

You want to place a bet on the "snow" tonight? I'm thinking nothing as forecasted or over 5 inches which is usually what happens from time to time. LOL

@Laura14 - they sometimes don't do the best job with snow predictions here. It's 37 now where I am.

After the snowmageddon of Feb '21, we all know the routine when bitter cold is forecast. We had the same arctic front blow in last week as almost everyone else....you have to drip both not and cold faucets; some forget to do both and that can be trouble. Leave cabinet doors open under all sinks...especially on exterior walls....cover outside faucets. I am amazed so many were unprepared in some southern states. We have had to do this for the past five days. Hopefully, this will be our last night and we will have had no major issues. We were getting alerts and reminders on our phones and on every weather and news show for several days before the temps dropped....no reason for anyone not to be prepared. Several people in our neighborhood help a few elderly who live here and make sure they are good to go before weather emergencies.
