Reboot it, like you would the cable box, computer or mobile phone. Turn it off and wait a few minutes. Then switch it back on. This has worked for me. If the auxiliary/emergency heat comes on your thermostat, drop down the temperature until it disappears. Then slowly bring it up a degree. When it reachs that degree move up another. Don't overload it with trying to handle too much at once. It's working hard to keep you happy in this cold.

I'm south enough to be well into Palm Beach County, and even here we got an email from our A/C company to turn the heat on before the temperatures fell too far because trying to raise the house near the temperature where we'd keep the A/C could easily blow out the heat pump beyond repair. My unit is too new to risk that, so even though I often go through the whole "winter" here without ever turning the heat on, I've added heat all day yesterday and today while the temperature is low and the sun hasn't made an appearance. Tomorrow should be far warmer with 80's for the new year weekend.

I had the same problem, the morning of Christmas Eve! I frantically called around to get a service call in. Thankfully, I found a place open and they added me to the list. He showed up, approximately 5 hours later. He checked my furnace out and then went outside, where the vent was located. The vent got clogged with snow and ice. Once he cleaned that out, we had heat again!

It's freezing here in SE MD with a high of 33 today...we have two heat pumps. One is about 8 years old and then we have the original one for downstairs that's 22 years old and I'm keeping my fingers crossed until this cold snap exits. I have been running one of those portable oil heaters downstairs all night (middle of room away from everything) with the ceiling fan on low to push heat around. It's fine upstairs, nice and toasty but it's chilly at night downstairs when it drops to 14 degrees but I don't want to stress the old heat pump. The supplemental heater is really helping to keep the freeze off. The old heat pump is set to 68 and I haven't touched it.

You might have to set your thermostat on EMERGENCY HEAT SETTING, if you have that setting. A heat pump would have EXTRA Heat Strips that come on after it is below 40 degrees (or whatever your HVAC guy set it up for). I have an oil furnace/boiler that comes on automatically when outside temperatures reach 40 degrees and below which shuts the Heat Pump off. MY EXTRA HEAT PUMP STRIPS WERE NEVER HOOKED UP BECAUSE my Oil Furnace is the Emergency heat-NOT the extra heat strips.
If setting your thermostat to Emergency Heat. Instead of the Heat option doesn’t help. You do have a service call issue. Batteries in the thermostat are still good and working if you can still use your thermostat screen.
Those batteries need to be changed at least once a year. Since forgetting to change the batteries makes them corrode inside thermostat MAKING THAT THE #1 REASON WHY PEOPLE NEED A THERMOSTAT REPLACEMENT!! FACT!!
The batteries will corrode and still be working. I learned this the hard way. SOME THERMOSTATS DO NOT HAVE BATTERIES. Always get the HVAC Tech to show YOU how to change the batteries-if you don’t already know how. Saves a lot of money to do it yourself.
Just pull the thermostat cover literally straight off of its wall held bracket-it will feel like you are about to break it. Replace batteries..And pop cover straight back onto wall mounted thermostat bracket.
Also, I know AC units are supposed to cool like 10-15 degrees lower than outside temps. Otherwise, your AC HVAC unit is working too hard.
Maybe it’s just too cold outside? Hope everyone can stay warm💖

I keep my thermostat at 66 during winter days and 61 at night, even when temps are way below zero and wind chill was -50 last week and during blizzards.

I have a thick sherpa lined sweatshirt to wear as a robe or during the day. I wear Ugg ultra minis as slippers. If I get chilly when sitting, I can add a throw blanket.
