So most of the birds were standing on the ground eating the food that had fallen. I guess they were tired of trying to hang onto the feeder as it moved around, and eat the bird food. They preferred to stand on the ground.

It has beconne a popular spot. Yesterday we even had a hawk. He wasn't able the get any of the bird food. The holders weren't designed for that big of a bird.

We got tired of watching the finches and little birds miss out on the birdfood. The starlings seemed to take over. So we bought 2 finch feeders and one feeder for the larger birds.

The Hawks don't come to the bird feeders for the food, they come for the birds. At least that's been my experience. I've never seen them eat bird food but I've seen them snatch a bird and eat it.

Yes, all the birds had taken off when the hawk appeared. But it was interesting watching the hawk try and sit on the ledge of the bird feeder. It finally gave up trying to sit on the bird feeder and flew to the ground to hang out.

They are definitely party crashers when they show up!!

A few years ago I had a bald eagle sit in my tree near the feeders. It was during a polar vortex event and he would show up every day and wait. All the water was still frozen so he couldn't fish and it may have been his last hope for a meal. The other birds were immediately aware of his presence and they took off. Spectacular sight but I have a tiny dog so I couldn't let her out alone!

I can barely keep the feeders full during this cold snap. Record number of birds have showed up and they are devouring the food as fast as I put it out.

It is 2:00 AM. There is no sleeping through this. I don't sleep well on a peaceful night so I can forget sleeping through this.

It's 41 now and raining and the temperatures are starting to drop. It's supposed to get down to 14.

But for right now, the wind is the thing. It is absolutely howling at times. No trees around my house, they're pretty far back, but I keep hearing noises from the wind all of our neighborhood and hope no one's house is being damaged.

I'm in north Metro Atlanta.

Atlanta's weather sounds similar to what we are having in the Boston area. We are expecting massive rain (up to 2 inches!) and winds from 30 to 60 MPH. today.

This is supposed to continue until Saturday morning. The power companies and weather forecasters are all saying we need to be prepared for possible power outages. Can you imagine the food loss if that happens with everybody's refrigerators bursting with Holiday supplies? The wind and rain are bringing temps into the 50s now, but then Saturday will be arctic circle cold. As far as I am concerned, it can rain, bluster and be freezing cold as long as the power stays on! It's time to get the National Guard out when the cable and internet goes out!! At least the outdoors can become my freezer if the fridge stops working!

I dont know how folks with dogs handle these brutal temps and winds and snow amounts.

I also am always amazed how we dont get weather info for Canada on tv when they are talking about across the country. I mean, how brutal is it there?!?

Im in Sarasota and its 68-70 at 5:45 am right now. My thoughts are with you all, especially those with those scary high winds. I actually am hoping for our temps dropping to 35ish Sat & Sun just to feel more holiday-like. I dont have to go anywhere. Even without the heat on, it stays warmer inside.

I wish you all safety and comfort for you and ones you care about.

@It's the calm before the wind right now. Early mornings at 6:00AM, Slight drizzle 45F. It'll all change in a few hours. Supposed to drop to 15F this afternoon. Saw the radar. Mostly rain is in the west. Some snow will be mixed in. I just want to able to get work just fine, LOL. Interesting coming back. Winds 25-35mph with gusts. Next 4 days under 35F, but then will get warmer. There are folks that will be in much worse shape then me. Please stay safe and pray you won't lose power!

@LizzieInSRQ , I am Canadian in Nova Scotia, east coast. We are forecast to get 50 mm of rain with 90-100km winds. It is starting this morning. There is not a flake of snow in sight and we will be having a green Christmas for the third year in a row. Today temps are just at freezing and we have not had any freezing temps to speak of.

In sharp contrast, British Columbia, normally much milder is experiencing a horrendous freezing temps and heavy snow and winds. It is like the coasts are flipped. This is the way the whole winter is forecasted to be.

Stay safe and warm everyone. A real possibility of no power for Christmas.

Travel plans in Canada are up in the air. I heard a travel agent interviewed this morning. He is also a part time flight attendant and he is stuck in Edmonton (west coast). Domino effect in play no matter what your departure City is. A true nightmare for the first travel period since Covid when many were wanting to get home for Christmas. LM

Hi, it's the OP. It was 41 when I started this thread at 2:00 AM.

It is now (7:30) 13 at my house and the wind is still strong. I keep hearing a noise on the back side of my house, right next to my bedroom, so I'm going to have to get dressed, go outside and see if I see any problems.

Now, if I actually see any problems, I have no idea what I'll do, but I at least need to go and investigate. Ok.....so I'll do that in a few minutes. Or some time soon.

I ended up having to take something to help me sleep. As I'd mentioned, I'm not a good sleeper on a good day and when you add in rain, high winds and anticipation, I just can't sleep.

@gidgetgh I'm in the midlands of South Carolina, and the wind has been howling here, too! We have a metal roof and lots of trees...I keep hearing things hit the roof, but no damage so far.

My DH says it's good that this happened AFTER most of the leaves are gone--they tend to "catch" the wind and make it more likely for trees to fall. But we've had a lot of rain, and the ground is very soggy, so who knows?

Everyone stay safe out there!
