Creative Solution or Dumbing Down?

The Daily Mail (UK) published this story today. Seoul, South Korea has been plagued by pedestrian accidents at busy intersections because people won't look up from their phones to see if it's safe to cross.

So the city installed lights in the sidewalk that turn red and green along with the traffic signals so there's no need to look up. The trials have been so successful the lights will be installed at more intersections.

Fewer accidents is a good thing, so why am I not happy about this?

This is ridiculous. Is what they're looking at on their phones more important than their lives?

Way too many people are looking at their phones like they are the only people in the world and everyone else has to look out for them. Not me!

I vote for dumbing down.

Don't get me started.........People around here (well, most) cross streets, looking down.

Like robots.

Except, the difference is that robots look ahead, not down.

Cellphone addiction before their own safety. Just as bad as other harmful addictions.

Instead of catering to them, maybe, a $500 ticket would work.

South Koreans can spend their money however they want, it doesn't bother me.

But here, I wouldn't be in favor. People can - and should - be bothered for a minute or two to consider their own safety.

@PickyPicky3 Because you'd be the one having to stop at a red light just so some fool with a cell phone can keep on texting.

This is a sore subject for me. Back in 2017, I was walking on the sidewalk to the entrance of my chiropractor and my DH was walking behind me as it would give the other person leaving room to walk by me.

This guy was looking down at his cell phone, didn't see me and as I tried to get out of his way, my right foot had to walk on the grass and my right ankle overturned and down I went.

I fell on my right shoulder and actually heard 3 cracks in my right ear. The pain was horrific and next thing I knew my chiro was outside with my DH and trying to see if I was ok. When they went to get me up, I almost passed out with pain. He checked my shoulder since I had literally no use of my right arm and told my DH to take me to the ER.

It was so bad, I ended up having to get a total shoulder replacement and after I saw the xrays of what they found, I almost passed out.

People need to get off their phones when they're out and about as they are walking. And if they're driving, stop looking at their cell phones.

I swear, some people are so addicted and connected to them, they sleep with them. It's ridiculous, but then again, I guess I'm old. My cell phone is turned on silent at bedtime as I don't want to hear any noise while I'm resting.

It's terrific that traffic accidents were reduced but what does that say about the world we live in. In my there is almost an epidemic of cars driving into buildings. It's distracted driving.

I live in a beach town where pedestrians have the right of way at any intersection without a traffic/walk signal.

So I ordered a new car that will automatically brake if and when I don't apply the brakes hard enough for anything in front of me.

Pedestrians will disobey the walk signals at controlled traffic light intersections. Their pea brain forgets, I guess....

If it saves lives, I'm for it. Easier than trying to control human behavior. We have automatic braking in cars, an alarm that doesn't shut off until you buckle your seatbelt, childproof caps on medicine bottles and suicide barriers on bridges for this very reason.

Are you against speed bumps too? There are people who have severe osteoporosis and other conditions that cause them to be bent forward and unable to look up. It would benefit them as well. Just because people should behave otherwise, doesn't justify lack of innovation to alleviate the situation.
