How Would You Phrase This?

If you have a shelf with room for two rows and you put duplicate items in back, would you say:

1 - multiples in back of shelves

2 - multiples on back row

3 - multiples behind front row

4 - or something else, and if so, what?

You already phrased it in your question:

"duplicates in back row".

Multiples means one of many. It doesn't necessarily mean exactly the same as what is also there, 6 towels in different colors are multiple towels.

Duplicate means identically the same as another. 6 towels all in blue are duplicates.

If you mean to label them as similar, they are multiples. If you wish to label them as identical, they are duplicates.

This seems the best choice to me.

However, I can't see the need to indicate what's in a second row unless it's different from the front row. Anyone who shops knows additional same items are stocked behind the those in front.

Great responses! Thanks so much. I've been going back and forth on this but have clarity now.

@occasionalrain Some of the shelves are high/low so things there aren't easily visible and not everyone is thorough when they check for items.

At work, I file paperwork to the back of each folder so possibly you could say --new stock is stored behind current stock.

Huh? Maybe my coffee just hasn't kicked in yet, so I'm still not clear on this ....

Are you saying you have two rows, one in front of the other ..........

or are you saying you have two rows side by side, with more behind them?

Why would it be necessary to say anything? Since I have been old enough to shop, same items are behind the front one. No wonder todays world is confusing.
