I'm feeling picked on

Came down with a bad head cold that I'm dealing with. And now my furnace won't kick on. I need some heat ! I called the repairman and he will be here this afternoon. GRRR

He had to fix my airconditioner in July and told me a need a new one and I'll bet he says the same thing about the furnace. They're 16 yrs old. His quote for both was 8,000. That's staggering because I only paid $4300 for them new 16 yrs ago. Talk about inflation. I'm hoping it's a simple fix, like a coupler or something.

It took 16 years for them to almost double in price.

I think that's not bad @Scooby Doo for both.

I'm sorry about the trouble and your sickness but, if it makes you feel better, I think my mother just repaced her furnace last year for $8000 alone. She lives in a small ranch with a basement, not a huge house.

We had to replace a/c and heat at a property last year and it was $11,000.

When I had my furnace replaced it wasn't the cost of the furnace or the labor to install it that was bad. The installer found that the old exhaust duct work was not up to code so I had to pay for that, too. Plus the new furnace didn't quite fit where the old one was and then I had to buy more duct work and have that installed as well. Cost me more than I wanted to spend but what was I to do about it?? Felt helpless.

You think thats bad my furnace up at my mountain house died a few days ago and the replacement is 15,000.

So sorry you do not feel well.

If you can replace BOTH for $8000.00, that is actually a bargain these days!

I have not yet had to put on my furnace--we have a 70 degree plus weather heat wave right now, and it is great.

I have two QVC Duraflame electric heater stoves in my home to keep off the chill (I swear by them--absolutely wonderful!), and many Dennis Basso heavy faux fur blankets to use for us all to cuddle underneath.

I also have a supply of soup--especially great when I feel congested.

I had to replace my water heater 5 years ago about 3 weeks before Christmas. On Dec. 23 the furnace stopped working and had to call the guy out to check. At that time it was over 20 years old. He put a bandaid on it and it conked out again 2 days after Christmas. It being so old was hard to get parts so had to purchase new furnace and since that wouldn't work out with the old central air unit, had to replace that also.

We replaced our HVAC 13 years ago...15 years is the life expectancy we were told. I dread the day when ours bites the dust!

I am sorry you are not feeling well.

Last year I had to replace my A/C and my Furnace and it was abut $11,000. Both units were original to the home, and my house is about 25 years old.

I had to drop $11K last March for an emergency furnace and A/C install. I can't complain as the furnace was 28 yrs. old. Certainly got my money's worth out of it.

If yours needs replacing, better to do it now before hard winter sets in and all the HVAC places are swamped with service calls. Having to do an emergency replacement is very stressful and not fun, believe me!

Check for rebates. I got a $1K rebate from my natural gas supplier in MA. Good luck!

Yeah, I got my a/c and furnace checked back in April before the Tx heat built up and while he was here he went ahead and checked the furnace.

I stay ahead of the pack. Don't wait till a holiday, week-end

JUly vacations and all that stuff. I put in 2 new water heaters and a hail guard over my skylight in kitchen.

No flies on this chick.

Well, it's not a cheap fix. He said the control panel is going out. So my options are $9,000 for both, middle of the road. $8,000 for the less expensive. $12,000 for all the bells and whistles. I could put $700 into a new control panel but I have to replace the air conditioner this summer anyway. That compressor is working too hard. He said furnaces are built to last less than 20 yrs due to all the technology that goes into them now. Government requirements and such. So I got my money's worth out of what's in there now for $4300. It's just like buying a new car.
