Turkey prices

I'm not in the market for a turkey, but my neighbor said she was at our grocery store, Publix, this morning and was going to go ahead and buy a frozen turkey for Thanksgiving.

But she changed her mind when she saw the price. $66 for a 25 pound turkey. $2.64 a pound.

I pre-ordered a fresh turkey at the Fresh Thyme Market in my neighborhood to pick up the day before Thanksgiving. It's $1.49 a pound, the same price as I paid last year.

@gidgetgh They've been warning us this was coming so it should not be a huge surprise to anyone. They may become completely unavailable so its probably wise to buy now if you really want one.

I saw on news this morning, the food banks are saying they're needing donations of turkeys. I think they may need to adjust their expectations on what is available, and whether people have money left to donate. Maybe they should encourage people to donate pork roast (although I know some people don't eat pork because of their religion).

I only have myself, I can easily do chicken, or ground turkey meatloaf.

And of course, if all else fails, maybe we can all try Marie's tofu turkey.I loved that show.

I read that Turkey was going to be expensive this holiday season. I already have two free turkeys available for pick up....up to 20 lbs. i earned them with points from grocery shopping.

I'll put them in the freezer for later. Turkey is not my favorite holiday meal.

I think Turkey prices will go down closer to thanksgiving.....stores will lower prices to entice people to shop there.

Food prices are going up all over. I went to a Jack in the Box this morning and noticed that most of their items have been increased by 50 cents. I usually buy a turkey breast and not the whole turkey so I really wouldn't know what the difference would be from year to year.

Everything ... even the cheap items .... cost too much these days.

I'll do what I always do ..... shop who has the best loss leaders and take it from there.

(If anyone isn't familiar with the retail term "loss leader" it means the retailer advertises the leading item - turkey - at a very low price so while you are in the store you will also buy all the other stuff that we typically cook for that holiday. (Celery, stuffing fixins, pumpkin etc; you get the idea)

Even if they lose money on the cost of each turkey, they make it back with the profits on all the many other things we buy this time of year.)

Our Aldi, Western PA, Butterball Frozen Turkeys 1.07 per pound in this week's circular.

they also have smoked frozen BB turkeys 2.19 a pound.

I bought one of these for our work Christmas lunch at work years ago and it was really very good...nothing left after it was put on the table!! Just have to thaw it our three or four days in the fridge before your party!!!

Our TOPS has turkeys but it's a secret what the price is, so I don't shop there. I don't like games when I shop. They also have a "monster meat" sale with no prices listed...

TOPS prices are generally ridiculous ( High!!) so I don't shop there often....they have one or two things I can't find in other stores (Lamb products and good deli roast chickens).

Butterball was $1.14 over the weekend, some other brand (I think Jenny-O) was .98 and Kroger is .99. I got a Norbest last week for $1.29.

As I recall, last year "they" tried to get people to buy early because there was "going to be a shortage" of turkeys blah blah blah...

Of course, the turkeys at that time were all the giant ones...so of course they cost a pretty penny.

The giant ones are what I saw in Walmart last week, so I THINK the panic is beginnning again.

As T-day got closer, the prices dropped...a LOT. And the smaller turkeys started to appear....the kind I want cause I'm one person....

Of course,if you're having guests or a big dinner and want to be sure, you probably should buy when you see it if you think this is not the usual "hurry up before it sells out it's rare" gimmicks.

I am going to bet that it is ( a gimmick) to sell those largest birds. "They" KNOW people are likely to gather this year more than the last few years....what a plucking they can do ( excuse the pun).

I could be wrong. Will report back!!!

You'd think that we seasoned QVC shoppers, exhorted in breathless tones to BUY! BUY! BUY! in the midnight show cause "some of these colors will be gone in the morning' would know by now...but alas, we never learn!!!

They're blaming high turkey prices on shortage of supply. Really? How convenient.

At the store today, there were more frozen turkeys than I've ever seen in the past. Every size you could possibly want.

Didn't check the price since I won't be making a turkey, but there sure didn't look like a shortage of turkeys, or anything else that I did notice had jacked up price points.

Just got an email from Whole Foods today saying their (frozen) organic turkeys are $2.49/lb. I actually think that's a good price and hope to pick one up before the sale is over. I'm not making one on Thanksgiving, but will on the Saturday afterwards.

I was in WM and they're overflowing with turkeys

Butterball $1.98

Jenny O $1.48/lb

I don't have room in my freezer so I'll wait for the sales in the coming weeks at Publix or whoever has them.

It's just me and DH...I only buy turkey breasts..Usually 3 or 4 times a yr...I've paid

$2.99 lb all along. Bought one on Monday.

Lidl has Butterball turkeys for .98/lb, and Shady Brook Farms for .49/lb.

Location must really make a difference!

My sister called me from Market Basket today. She was stunned to see whole turkeys for 89cents a pound!!!

I don't care. Thanksgiving and Christmas only come around once a year. As long as they are less than $10 a pound, I'm buying a turkey. I can't go through life nickel and diming everything.

Went shopping this morning. I wanted a bone in turkey breast. Found one at Fry's for $2.49 a pound. Albertsons had theirs for $1.99 a pound. Used my senior discount and saved a little more.
