Quiet Quitting???

There's this new thing that for those who still work; rather than quit their job outright, they are participating in something known as "Quiet Quitting." The definition of this is not that they have intentions of leaving their employment, but rather they are slowing down (possibly not meeting deliverables on time) and not going above and beyond like they used to do.

"Quiet quitters" make up at least 50% of the U.S. workforce -- probably more, Gallup finds.

The trend toward quiet quitting -- the idea spreading virally on social media that millions of people are not going above and beyond at work and just meeting their job description -- could get worse. This is a problem because most jobs today require some level of extra effort to collaborate with coworkers and meet customer needs.

U.S. employee engagement took another step backward during the second quarter of 2022, with the proportion of engaged workers remaining at 32% but the proportion of actively disengaged increasing to 18%. The ratio of engaged to actively disengaged employees is now 1.8 to 1, the lowest in almost a decade.

The drop in engagement began in the second half of 2021 and was concurrent with the rise in job resignations. Managers, among others, experienced the greatest drop.

The overall decline was especially related to clarity of expectations, opportunities to learn and grow, feeling cared about, and a connection to the organization's mission or purpose -- signaling a growing disconnect between employees and their employers.

Many quiet quitters fit Gallup's definition of being "not engaged" at work -- people who do the minimum required and are psychologically detached from their job. This describes half of the U.S. workforce.

Everyone else is either engaged (32%) or actively disengaged (18%). The latter are "loud quitters." Actively disengaged employees tend to have most of their workplace needs unmet and spread their dissatisfaction -- they have been the most vocal in TikTok posts that have generated millions of views and comments.

Most employees who are not engaged or actively disengaged are already looking for another job.

https://www.gallup.com/workplace/398306/quiet-quitting-real.aspx

I already read about quiet quitting several weeks ago. Following the article I read was another one that said some employers were doing quiet firing (not promoting, not keeping the employee in the loop, indirectly squeezing them out)

Why should they be punished for wanting a living wage, benefits, and respect?

If corporations would treat people with respect and pay a living wage, they'd get a lot better productivity and loyalty from employees.

I was an officer for a huge international corporation. The cruelty I saw the last 10 years was abhorrent. Managers ridiculed employees in public, called them names, picked on people, gave raises only to pets, discriminated in a way that HR wasn't couldn't confirm, singled out people over 60, etc etc. Within 6 months of my retirement, everyone over 60 in all my depts were fired, quit or retired.

I would regularly get yelled at for not screaming, yelling, and calling my people names, writing people up, etc. However, my depts always had the best productivity. Perhaps it's because I treated them better than other leadership.

I can't tell you how many times someone would brag about offering pay below the minimum for a job "because they could" and then want a pat on the back for saving money in the budget.

My job took me all over the country working with countless other big corporations in the same kind of business. They all bragged about the same kinds of things. It made me sick to my stomach.

It's all about integrity. If you don't like your job, leave. If you are paid to do a job, do it, and if you want to advance and be appreciated, work harder than the others. If you feel that you aren't recognized for your extra efforts, leave and find a company that does appreciate you.

Those who are "quiet quitting" will never get ahead and years later will wonder why they've been passed over, and probably blame someone else - take a look in the mirror.

Turnover is a problem for many companies, and if their staff is constantly changing because people are leaving, then senior leadership should be finding out why.

I have worked for multiple companies through mergers and acquisitions, and have found that if you work hard, put in a solid days worth, then you will be rewarded. If I felt unappreciated in the 40 years that I've worked, I would have left and found a company that does appreciate my efforts.

I've always said that you are only as good as the last day you worked, if you were a slacker yesterday, then you are a slacker worker and it doesn't matter how long you've been there.

It's nothing new. It just has a name now. In my last job I basically did quiet quitting. I hated the company, not fond of most of the people and the work was mind numbing. The company did not give raises ever. (Oh maybe a few bucks every five years or so but basically nothing much). I stayed because I had enough time in to get a nice severance package and I was only hanging on because of it. I was with the company 8 years and saw nothing but a company being run into the ground. Sure I could have probably quit years earlier but I was getting to old for most places to want to hire me even though I was only in my 50's.Transfer to another position wouldn't happen either because most jobs were out of state. When review time came around everyone got the same review but with a different grade. If you were one of the last ones hired in the department the best you would ever get would be a 4 with 5 being the lowest. No matter if you reinvented the wheel you would get a bad review. I knew it was just a matter of time before layoffs were coming so I basically did the bare minimum since I knew there was nothing in it for me and the company didn't care. And frankly neither did any of the employees at this point. I was right. After about two years into my current position they transferred the job to another city. I got what I wanted, my severance pay. I decided I had had enough of corporate America and retired. I understand why quiet quitting is a thing.

If someone is fulfilling minimum requirements of their job it’s very difficult if not impossible to fire them. However, it was my experience, that if you went above or beyond expectations, you could be rewarded quite handsomely. I had many “quiet quitters” working for me but I’d not use that term. They were basically long term employees who felt they would never be fired & were lazy.

In the end, they lost their jobs when the Company outsourced our department & tried to place many of the employees with the new company. Only high performers were selected. If you are of a certain age & lose your pension, that’s a big deal.

" Quiet Quitters " should get a taste of their own medicine. They should be on the receiving end of lousy service . At one time in America people 's self esteem was in part based on how they treated their fellow humans and their work ethic. Now a days , many are feeding their egos on Facebook, Tik tok or some other social platform , bragging abt gaming others or being mean. There were some old Youtube videos abt those guys who enacted mean " jokes " on people esp homeless brought on a new world to teens .

I worked in health care and I came across lazy slackers whose slow or lack of action almost cost peoples lives so Quiet Quitters need to think abt themselves being in a life threatening situation where another Quier Quitter could cost them their life by slow or lack of action. The workforce is dwindling down by this sick egotism .
