I miss hearing church bells. They were so comforting as a child.

The lawnmower. I grew up in the suburbs but lived in cities all my adult life, so I also miss the absence of sounds quite a bit.

Church bells, sounds of horses shuffling up around the barn on the hill, coyotes in the pasture, hay bales hitting the ground, tractors and combines running, clanking of chains hitting the tailgates of big grain trucks, George teasing me when he filled up the car, Uncle saying "Get on in here!" at the front door. . . so many!

The sound of a bell when a door opened to let the cashier know a person entered a store. The sound of a cashier actually punching in numbers at a cashier box instead of using a scanner at a grocery store. The sound of a rotary phone being dialed.

@Mersha I rarely hear the church bells that I heard as a kid. I also miss the sound of trains on the tracks that ran along the river nearby....

Train whistle in the distance and the deck of the wooden bridge near my home. They tore out the wood deck and replaced it with metal.

The village noontime siren. just one blast. all in town could hear it and distant noon whistles from neighboring villages could be heard several beats after.

same thing with the fire alarm siren but it would sound off over and over. we only had volunteer fire departments. when siren blew all the volunteers headed to man the fire engines.

church bells -- the church was across the street

traffic--I lived right on the busiest four- lane street in my area as a child

trolley--it was at the cross street a block from my home. The tracks were removed before I was four. I worried that we would have no way to get places. Naturally, I never had heard of a bus, that quickly took over the trolley routes.

train whistles--the train tracks were less than three blocks way

clip clop of horses-- when I was a child, ice cream was delivered in a horse drawn wagon with ice

My mom's sewing machine. She was always making something whether it was a quilt or clothing for us, always sewing, never thought I would miss that sound??!!

School musicals on a stage in any school's old auditorium

Listening to the Lawrence Welk show sitting on my grandparents living room floor
Hearing sermons from old Gospel preachers on any station at all
Hearing all the fun and laughter from everyone at an annual fair come to town
Dozing off and waking up to realize the white noise your hearing is the only TV channel you get was off air

The sound of Grandpa and Dads tractor, a 1953 Farmall Super C, the grunts and squeals from the hog pen, the sound of a road grader when it scraped the road in front of the house, the sound of gravel trucks laying new gravel, the train whistle when it approached the road crossing, the railroad shop whistle that sounded at the start of shift, lunch, and end of shift 5 days a week, the sound of church bells ringing at our Methodist church and the Community church in our neighborhood, the clicking sound of the older gas pumps when you pumped gas, the old cash registers, the sound of the old adding machines that used rolls of tape, the sound of an IBM selectric typewriter, the sound of the sliding glass top on the old pop coolers, and my favorite, the sound made when you ran outside and let the screen door slam shut!
