UPDATE ON AUTHOR SALMAN RUSHDIE'S CONDITION AFTER ATTACK

In August, while conducting a literary discussion at the venerable Chautauqua Institution in western New York state, famed novelist Salman Rushdie suffered multiple wounds in a shock stabbing attack by a man who rushed the stage.

Word of his condition and possible recovery since then has been scarce, but his literary agent Andrew Wylie has now spoken out, CBS news reports.

He declined to say if Rushdie, 75, is still hospitalized, or discuss his exact whereabouts. This is understandable, since he's been under a death threat from Iran for his writings since 1989.

Stabbed in the neck, chest, stomach, hand and right eye, the much-honored free speech proponent was intially put on a ventilator and little was known about his prognosis.

Wylie reports that he has lost the sight in his eye, and the use of one hand, from nerves that were severed during the brutal attack. One can only imagine the trauma he has sustained, and the continuing difficulty he will suffer as a result.

But at least he will live. The perpetrator, currently in jail (thankfully) , has been interviewed, and has expressed "surprise" that Rushdie survived the attack.

I too was almost surprised that the perpetrator wasn't out by now under one of those misguided "no-bail" plans, @just bee . But given how "high profile" the case is, there was probably no question of that. I'm jaded enough now to think that, if the victim were a regular Jane or Joe, the story might be different.
