Tinnitus

Does anyone have this condition?I'm pretty sure I do so I'm going to see my doctor. So that I don't sound dumb, how is this pronounced? I thought it was "tinn i tis" but I heard someone pronounce it "TIN- i-tis" Which is right?

I just looked it up and discovered that I've been pronouncing it wrong. It's tin-uh-tus with the emphasis on the first syllable. My son and husband both have this problem.

@GoneButNotForgotten My daughter is an audiologist. She has corrected me many times 😊. It is pronounced tinn I tus. .....although it is many times pronounced the other way.
I just saw my ENT for the condition. Apparently there is not much that can be done...sometimes it is temporary. I had a ruptured eardrum as a kid...so that is part of my problem. The ENT recommended a sound canceling machine for nights when it is especially bothersome. Not sure if that is the answer...

I had it and I pronounce it emphasizing the 2nd syllable. 🤷‍♀️

Mine was due to extremely low active B-12; my hematologist now gives me B-12 shots (cynocobalamin) and it went away asap. Might be worth looking into.

As a retired medical transcriptionist, I have listened to many ENT physicians dictate notes. I've heard both pronunciations. So I say either is okay.

I have suffered with this for several years. There are many causes and few "cures". Most drs. will tell you to "habituate", which means basically, learn to live with it. I've heard that either pronunciation is correct.

Yes I had this for about 30 years. I have no hearing in my left ear. I have hearing aids but don't bother using them much. I count on captions and reading lips. Noise level varies, usually I hear three sounds at a time, hissing, music and a motor running. Very bothersome. I'm sure there's no plan to help with this because you can't die from it. I need a sleep-aid every night or can't sleep. No one cares. I make the best of it by keeping my mind busy.

@GoneButNotForgotten I've had it for 16 years. I always pronounced it "tin I tis." Lost hearing in one ear due to an autoimmune attack. Killed all the nerves in my ear. I would have to get a cochlear implant in order to hear. No real cure for the tinnitus.

A friend had that annoying condition for quite awhile...after trying many common remedies .....he went to an acupuncturist and had good results.....

@GoneButNotForgotten ...........Yes I have tinnitus and have had it since I was around 12 yrs old. I had so many ear infections as a kid that it destroyed both nerve and bone in my ears. I am completely deaf in my left ear and losing hearing in the right.

I went to an audiology clinic and the doc said they now believe that the noise (tinnitus) is caused by the brain trying to compensate for hearing loss.

Basically there is nothing that can be done for tinnitus. Hearing aids do help to lessen it. BTW hearing aids from the audiologist office were $3,200, $4,200 & $6,200. I would consider one if I were younger but at age 77 I cant justify that cost.

On the other hand I have been seeing commericals for hearing aids that are more than amplifiers (what the cheapo's are) and affordable. I am going to check into them.

I can not be in absolute quiet!

Tinnitus is pronounced either way and either is correct. The doctors I worked with, their pronunciations of certain medical terms depended on what medical school they attended.

@Imaoldhippie - Due to legislation that was just passed, you can now buy hearing aids directly over the counter for hundreds, not thousands. Go to a reputable pharmacy or retailer (Walmart, Best Buy, etc.) to see what's available.

I wouldn't buy any of the stuff that "As Advertised on TV", but that's just my opinion.

With all the advances with tiny headphones, it wasn't much of a leap to producing less expensive hearing aids. It was just in the interest of the companies producing them to block the legislation for so long.

@Imaoldhippie Did you see the news where hearing aids that are not just amplifiers are now going to be available over the counter and at greatly reduced prices than from a hearing aid specialist. Also medicare will pay $500 toward hearing aids at least under my medical plan. You can see an audiologist and get a prescription and then buy OTC.

The cost of hearing aids is absolutely ridiculous as they currently are. This OTC should be a blessing for many.

I have had tinnitis (and pronounced it tin I tus) for many years...it is aggravating at times, but I have generally learned to live with it. I can't wear earplugs, however, as that just concentrates the noise in my head and drives me crazy. Per the audiologist, it hasn't affected my hearing, however.

I have had ear ringing at a tolerable level for many years but have gotten used to it. BUT a couple years ago I had a very loud ringing in my ears - so bad I thought it was the smoke arlarm going off and it woke me up. I actually thought DH was mistaken when he said there was no noise and went outside looking for a siren, or machine or something.

Turned out it was in my ears and at the same time it caused a bad spasm in my back. I called my PCP and was told to immedially go to the ER as it could be the warning of a stroke. I went and had a cat scan and showed nothing. Since then I have seen my ENT who had no explaination and sent me to the ortho who did my shoulder surgery a couple years before, a neurologist who order echocardio to r/o seizure, a neuro surgeon and have also mentioned it to every other doctor I have seen. Evidently none of ever heard of this horrible ear noise affecting a muscle in the back area but it is a painful spasm. Goes away until the next time I hear the noise. The noise has lessened greatly since the first episode but it still more than normal tinnitus and also accompanied by the muscle pain in my back/shouder area every time.

Nothing serious medically has occurred as a result except it often interrupts my sleep and it is uncomfortable. It will disappear for a few weeks and I think Oh Good it's gone, but it alway returns.

Leave it to me to get the off the wall stuff.

I've had it for a while. I hear "crickets" and I also hear my heartbeat. The doctor said there isn't much that can be done about it. I've learned to live with it.

I also have this, there is no cure although some pills online claim they do. What I have found is B12 pills and Andrew Lessman circulation and vein support pills help..

I have bad tinnitus and in addition to ringing, sirens, people talking the most annoying thing I hear is "free shipping & handling" in a man voice, over, and over. I can't turn it off like the TV!

I'm going to keep that in mind. I've discovered that accupuncture can uncover the most surprising things. I found out--by means of accupuncture--that there was something going on in my liver a long time before I was diagnosed with hepatitis.

wow, you've really been through the wringer! I hope your tinnitus is at a bearable level for now.

Mine isn't really all that bad; the sound is like the whoosing of cars on a freeway and I can ignore it a lot. I'd rather have it gone, of course, but if it doesn't get any wors3 than it is now, I can live with it.

I have heard it pronounced both ways by doctors who attempted to treat it. I am stuck I am sure. Came directly after my Covid booster and I still hear hissing sounds. Wish there were a cure. If anyone has had success with fixing the problem please let me know.
