@BoopOMatic : Sad but sometimes really happens. Previously hosted Thanksgiving for 18 people that lived in another state and I chose to do all the cooking. Why- the thoughts of anyone trying to transport cooked food for a three hour trip. I really have food safety issues. I am now dependent on a walker and very slow. Due to health issues DH and I are not able to travel for several hours. DH doesn't want anything catered ( exception : purchase the Honey Baked Ham and Turkey). The other people are hinting that I do Thanksgiving but we skipped the last 3 years. They know that I will prepare something for DH and I and still should include them. No one wants to go to a restaurant. Me still saying "no". But the other people do stay in contact with us all during the year. I miss the fellowship. I thought of just doing a sandwich and dessert buffet but DH said no. Too many twist and turns and complicated .

Since YOU are the head chef, YOU say what goes, especially on a walker. If they want to meet at house, let them prepare the feast there. Geez, this has got to stop!!!!

You deserve another way to have this family holiday. Stand your ground.

@SouthernBee If you don't feel like doing it, tell them that, with a firm "No, I am not able to do a large dinner for everyone".

We tried to do the sandwich/dessert thing with my husband's family one year for Christmas--even though we would all bring something, the major load was on MIL's shoulders. Anyway, we decided what sandwich fixings, breads, etc. each of us would bring. We showed up Christmas afternoon with all our stuff, only to find that MIL (at FIL's insistence) had cooked a ham and all the regular sides!

Now we had just had the big traditional Thanksgiving dinner a month before, so we thought it would be easier on her for us to all contribute to a simpler meal. And you can bet my FIL didn't lift a finger to help her! We didn't try that again.

Not that my FIL was an awful person, he was a very good man--just very traditional as to woman's vs. man's work. I loved them both dearly, and still miss them a lot!

Nowadays, DH & I do a traditional, but smaller, Thanksgiving meal for ourselves. Christmas dinner is whatever we decide we want, sometimes it's steaks, roast beef, pork chops, whatever. Sometimes just sandwiches!

I've always thought Thanksgiving is overrated. In certain cases, people feel obligated to get together with family they don't like. (Not everyone, as some families do get along.)

When I was younger we went to my Aunt's house for Thanksgiving, out of tradition. But no one in our family would have felt bad if it was cancelled. IMO it's a holiday for overeating, although the football part is good.

I have always loved Thanksgiving and find it an easy meal to prep and serve. HOWEVER, I am patiently waiting for the younger generation in the family to take it over. Mind you, I am not holding my breath for that!

This year part of the family is away and Ive already announced I am not hosting and cooking. My husband and I will make other arrangements if no one picks up the slack! No problem going out for me!

It is my favorite holiday of the year and November is my favorite month and I am a Christmas Eve baby so that says alot!!. Two years ago with covid Thanksgiving was so small just my son, dil, and two grandchildren. Last year it was back on track but got cancelled late in the afternoon of the Wednesday before. My nephew whose home it was being hosted in was diagnosed with covid. I have given him strict instructions already for this upcoming holiday back in his home that no one is allowed to breathe on him.
