@tansy

I agree. If one lives long enough they probably get more back than they put into SS. Since I have never seen a total of how much of my money they took, I have no idea how that balances out for me.

I started taking mine at 62. My feeling was, and still is the same. Who knows how long they are going to live? The same way I have lived my life: "A bird in the hand is worth 5 in the ****". I did the math before I retired and calculated by getting my SS at 62, the difference between that and 65, at the time I retired? It would take 13 years before I would be losing money by choosing age 62.

So after 75 I started losing money by claiming my SS at age 62. At 62, age 75 seemed like an age I might not make. Now at 83? I would make the same decision using the "bird in the hand".

Same theory I used with my retiring company benefit $$$$. I cashed in on every single one I had at that time. Some that retired at the same time kept their 401 etc. and after several years of making money on the company changed name of Lucent? The bottom fell out and many lost 6 figures when their investments were worth $0.50 per share.

My money was not lost, so that worked out well for me. Rolling the dice with my $$ has never been in my DNA. I make money and use it wisely. Never got or will get rich, but will never lose money by hoping to make more.

hckynut 🇺🇸

When will I know what my Social Security benefits are for 2023?

The Bureau of Labor Statistics is scheduled to announce inflation data for September on Oct. 13, and the Social Security Administration typically announces the cost-of-living adjustment issues soon after -- in some cases on the same day.

Beneficiaries should then receive letters detailing their specific benefit rate.

I am subject to the WEP so SSA keeps over 60% of my own social security every month. So unfair. All because I chose to go into public education. Also impacts other public employees such as first responder pensions in some states. I am grateful for the SS I do get but it is my own money I paid into it years ago...so it is owed to every recipient of SS, it's not a gift.
