California's dead will have a new burial option: Human composting

It does not get any weirder or macabre than this. In many states this is against the Law to leave a body without cremation or burial. I didn't even know this was a "thing" in some of our states until I read this story.

California will begin allowing an alternative burial method known as human composting in 2027, under a bill signed by Gov.

Supporters say it's an eco-friendly alternative to traditional end-of-life options. Cremation, for example, is an energy-intense process that produces carbon dioxide emissions, while traditional burial uses chemicals to embalm bodies and a nonbiodegradable coffin to store them.

California will join Washington, Colorado, Oregon and Vermont in allowing human composting.

Luke Perry was buried like this on his family's farm in Tennesee.

Luke was buried in an eco-friendly mushroom burial suit which the manufacturer claims is able to remove polluting toxins from the body while naturally breaking it down.

OMG. I am positive that somewhere there is a "culture" that does this as we are not all the same and have different customs and norms, I just wonder about the disease the person may have had (if any). If they can find traces of naturally occuring arsenic in drinking water, what in the world do we think will happen to the soil?

The good thing is this is an option and not mandatory....

You'll own nothing, eat bugs & when the end comes get thrown in a human composting pile where the bugs that eat you will then feed the living...a perfect circle for everyone but the elite.

My mother had a green burial which is based on the same principle. Also better for the environment not to leach all the the embalming fluid into the ground.

Yepper! Things that we are not accustomed to can seem strange to us. For instance, the cuisine of many cultures that I have learned about are not what I would call strange, but wild. Things we would never eat in our culture here. Yeah, about as strange as that...yep! It's strange because as a country "we don't do this."

I don't think I'd mind. I've made it clear that I'd not want a funeral, coffin/burial, or any of that expensive stuff as it's just not worth it for me.

I don't begrudge others their choices, of course.

But I've long said that if I had my druthers I would just donate anything that could help somebody else and, for all I care, just throw the rest in the trash.

I feel the same way about donation of limbs, organs, etc. I don't begrudge anyone their right to do with their remains when they're gone. I'm concerned that such a policy is not thoughtfully carried out and how it can affect crops and water. Not that I care that someone chooses. In America, we're used to decomposing in a coffin. That's it. I find it strange.

I am sure this is against many religious beliefs. How horrible for family members to even think a loved one would be treated like this.

Years ago I saw a special about people who donated their bodies to a place called the Body Farm. I thought I'd heard of everything until I saw that. The bodies there aren't even buried and are studied.

@gertrudecloset Against human composting, yes.

The RCC approves of natural (green) burials, however. Many Catholic cemeteries now have natural (green) burials.

Funny what cultures think are appropriate or not. Pulling out your organs, draining your blood, filling you with embalming fluid and putting you in a box in the ground with makeup on? Now THAT sounds gross. 😝

The human composting isn’t a new concept. It’s not disrespectful if that is what the person wishes.
