I constantly read threads here about people shopping at Kohl's and raving about the bargains they get there and the fine merchandise.

I have a store near me and have been in it once when the need suddenly rose for some luggage for a trip. I opened an account just to get a big discount and that's the last they saw of me.

There has recently been a lot of talk on the NextDoor app about a Kohl's somewhere in Albuquerque. People report being in the store and seeing people grabbing arm loads of any merchandise they can carry and walking out the door with it without anyone saying a word to them.

Employees have been instructed to let them go and they've been upset to the point if tears. There are no security guards. One woman left the store upset and returned later that day to find metal gates across the entrance. They were unable to control the thefts so they closed temporarily.

If I was a Kohls shopper, I'd think twice about becoming involved in a mess like that, especially considering the company policy of no protection for anybody. Apparently some outraged customers have tried to stop the thieves or have followed them. What's to keep gunfire from breaking out in the store?

Word has gotten around that thieves can take what they want from Kohl's, putting them, their employees and customers in a dangerous position. Might want to keep that in mind.

I go in to my local Kohls a lot never had any issue.

@Kachina624 I know that in CA the LAW is that there is no prosecution for any soplifting UNDER $950.00!!!!

The police depts in many of the big cities there aren't even notified when events such as you mention take place because no one will prosecute the criminals.

Is there a similar law in N.M?

Here in AZ, there is no such law.

@pdlinda I don't know what the limit is here but the big box hardware stores are suffering huge loses on tools. People are up in arms so I think our legislature will enact some new laws to crack down on it next year.

The market where I shop in WA has a policy to not confront shoplifters. It's the store's policy to protect its employees. I am not sure if an attempt is made to get the license plate number.

Personally I do not care for Kohl's.

I have a Kohls account and a store within a mile from me but I hardly ever shop there anymore. They recently opened a Sephora inside the Kohl's. I haven't heard anything re people walking out with items not paid for yet. The issues here are thugs breaking into CBD dispensaries and Gun stores trying to steal but the stores have barriers they can't penetrate thank goodness. These idiots would rather steal than work a honest job ! Sad !!

I have never had any issues with Kohl's and I like that they give Kohls cash, and they do Amazon returns.

At Best Buy they get the license plate, turn into the law. Law follows up

Its not just Kohl's and I don't believe its stores' fault. I believe it's an insurance policy thing. ULTA gets hit here quite severely - same circumstances. It does, however, make me hesitant to shop in smaller store like that because thieves usually armed.

The dollars walking out doors are crazy high. Someone has to be buying this merchandise..... Are we to believe those buying thus discounted stuff don't know where it comes from?

@Twins Mom You could probably pick up some of those bargains from ULTA on eBay. I haven't heard of problems from our larger stores with security like Macy's and Dillard's.

I've never had a problem in my Kohls and mine has the Amazon return, so that's handy. I don't go often, but I do like their Croft & Barrow T's & Turtlenecks. It's more than likely a store policy made as an attempt to protect the employees. I don't really know of any stores around here that has security guards, and I really don't think they want their employees trying to chase down a possibly armed shoplifter.

Back before the pandemic, I was in a JoAnn's and I noticed a man pushing a cart out of the store full of stuff. I had just gotten to the checkout counter, so I pointed it out to the cashier and she just shrugged her shouldders and said there was nothing she could do. I guess they don't even notify the police for fear of retaliation.

The Kohl's I visit in Brooklyn, NY has two guards standing right at the entrance/exit. There is one security guy on each floor and he's visible and walking around to be observant. It is most plausible to believe a shoplifter would not get far past the exit without being hailed to stop. If they kept walking (or running) they would be physically detained. Shoplifting attempts in Brooklyn are as common as everywhere else, but not very successful .

Kohl's around my way is very orderly, the merchandise is kept neat and well supplied, and it's big, busy and easy to shop. Checkout lines tend to be long but move fast. No one gets unruly and I think shoplifters are appropriately discouraged.

I worked at Olive Garden for six years. Their policy was that if someone tried to dash and dine, we were to do nothing. They felt our lives were more important than The cost of a meal. This is no different.

No issues with my Kohls and if there was the police would get involved. I do not live in the city but in the burbs.

It is not Kohls fault, their employees are safer by avoiding the criminals and no violence will happen as demonstrated with all the smash and grabs in many cities. If the criminals are caught there is no prosecution. Look to the lack of leadership and possibly lack of enough police, but not the store.

I shop Kohls but mostly online. I just received a 30% off coupon so I bought some petite joggers and gloria vanderbilt amanda petite jeans. I haven't been to the store in awhile,but, I hope anyone shopping at any Kohls is safe! All this shoplifting has to stop, no matter what type of stores! When you see smash and grab on tv, it's crazy!

This sort of theft does not happen in my little city. But is quite the problem upstate in the Chicago area.

My Kohls is quite safe and I shop there often.

@Kachina624 I have had a Kohl's account for years and I shop there when I need something. Their sales are great and their discount coupons and Kohl's cash can't be beat. I have never seen anything like what you describe people walking out with arm loads of items and not paying. I don't put much stock in what people say they saw or heard about on the Internet. The Kohl's stores where I shop are clean, well stocked and usually have friendly helpful sales staff. And I have never once felt uneasy or uncomfortable in a Kohl's store.

I know there are those who don't like Kohl's for some reason and that's their right but to paint Kohl's like the stores need armed guards because of looters and criminals to me is a bit of a stretch.

@SharkE but somebody has to be brave enough to follow the thieves out to their car. If they're the type of person who steals like that, they could also be the type of person who would hurt you. It's a good idea though, to get the license plate. Maybe there ie a safer way. While I completely appreciate all security guards, not all would be more effective than just talking to thieves who would probably just carry on with the theft. I guess security guards could take pics of the person and lic plate.

This style theft does happen. A previous poster seems to doubt. I like Kohls, they have good deals, but our local one closed. I have shopped Kohls online. We shopped high and low for our favorite pants, and Kohls had them.
