NECTARINES!

They have been unbelievably good all summer. I mean, exceptionally good-- juicy, ripe, tender (but not mushy), bursting with flavor.

We also like "Pennsylvania peaches", but they seem to be scarce. I tried one batch of other peaches this summer, which were disappointing.

So it's been nectarines, all the way. I was hesitant this time, wondering if they'd be past their prime. But decided to purchase anyway yesterday-- figured I'd make a crisp or a cobbler if they were sub-par.

But, happy to testify, the ones I got yesterday, the last day of August, are spectacular. I hope they are equally good wherever you are.

I've ate so many peaches from Colorado I don't want any more LOL

We bought peaches once this summer and they were awful so didn't bother again.

The tangerines, clementines and oranges have also been awful.

The only good fruit we've had all summer long are strawberries and blueberries.

I bought some today to make a nectarine-blackberry crumble:

Slice 6 nectarines and gently toss in bowl with 1 pint blackberries, 1 1/2 tsp cinnamon, 1/8 tsp salt, 1/4 cup brown sugar, and 2 tbsp water. Place in buttered 9x13" baking dish. Stir together 1 1/2 cup quick oats, 1 1/2 cups flour, 3/4 cups sugar, 1/2 cup brown sugar, and 1 cup melted butter. Sprinkle over fruit in dish. Bake at 350 degrees for 40 minutes.

Extra yummy served with ice cream.

We have to drive to Santa Fe or Los Alamos to find Palisade peaches -- but it's worth the road trip!

OH @Oznell what bad timing! We just got back from the farmers market. Will have to buy some next time.

On the way back from New Jersey we bought corn, tomatoes and peaches. The peaches were tremendous. It is almost worth driving back to New Jersey to get more. Peaches always seem to be a hit and miss, too often.

Can't wait to try nectarines. They can also be a hit or miss. Thanks for mentioning.

@Oznell I LOVE Nectarines. This years batch has been excetional. They seem to be larger than I usually find (I am in SE PA) and they are very sweet and juicy. I like peaches too, but if I had to choose, I would pick a nectarine over a peach.

@Oznell We've been eating local peaches for about a month and a half now. They are unbelievably sweet. Maybe the hot, dry weather? We were told they were going to be scarce in SE PA this year, but they seem to be plentiful at our local farm market. Then again, they said the Jersey blueberries were not going to be as plentiful, and they had a very long season. Hmmm.....

I love nectarines! I've been buying them for the past few weeks and they are fabulous, and huge! I've been cutting them in half because they are so big. I'll have one half with cottage cheese for breakfast and the other half at lunch. The dark plums have been good, too.

I much prefer nectarines to peaches. It has been a great season for nectarines...the peaches I have seen have been hard as rocks, then ripen into a pile of mush.

I love nectarines but they run $2.00+ each so I can only splurge once in a while for one. Colorado peaches are luscious and cost less than nectarines so I bought a few of them over the last month.
