Enough Water Bottles

It seems like every event with giveaways has water bottles to offer. What a waste. DD came home from employer training and there was another bottle. Another thing for landfill. If they were quality it would be different story. This spring our chamber if commerce sponsored a run and a bottle made in China and keychain were given in bag. I politely suggested that this was a waste of merchsnts' money.

Many people EXPECT these goodie bags when attending events, then complain about what they get. Probably the same ones who take anything because they are "free",no matter if they need it or not.

I have been recycling plastic bottles for more than a decade ... I thought everyone did that. Honestly, I wasn't aware people were still throwing bottles in the regular garbage that goes to landfills.

Aren't there ANY recycling locations or dumpsters anywhere in your community?

@Tinkrbl44 I think the OP is talking about the re-useable water bottles with a company logo on them, much like the re-useable travel coffee mugs that everyone has 5 or 10 of.

I don't think she means regular water bottles like found in the grocery store but rather cheaply made insulated reusable bottles with the company logo. @Twins Mom You have a valid point.

Yes I use to go to work functions where a bunch of junk was handed out with the company name on it, you do have a good point, for one thing those water bottles are cheaply made so are probably not even used much just tossed.

I have 3 of my own hard plastic bottles. Each hold 34oz. and I always have it with me. Home it is always within arms reach, as I drink usually 4 a day, more if a hard workout or skating.

I alternate them every few days. Out hot water in them with a dental tab. Let it sit for a couple hours, stick a brush inside ti make sure it's clean, and let it air dry.

Wherever I go, one goes with me. I prefer our filtered water to any pre filled plastic throw away bottle brand.

I am referring to the metal and plastic water bottles largely made in China. I absolutely support quality bottles that can be reused. I like to be able to feel good about quality of merchandise that I eat and drink from. Sorry for confusion

My area of WV has no recycling available for paper/cardboard or plastic; it all goes into the landfill.

We do have a recycling center for aluminum cans and scrap metal. Scrap metal prices are apparently good enough to motivate people into cleaning up their property of old cars and mobile homes.

Reusable water bottles are the current giveaway. In the past, I remember hats, t-shirts, office items, etc.

some do get used. Others don't.

I still use the solar powered calculator that my Dad's business gave away about 30+ years ago!

Sam's and Costco the selection is endless....they keep getting more and more...whatever color or design they have whatever water bottle you could possibly be looking for....

Actually I suggested that if every sponsor chipped in what they spent on giveaways, participants could be given a coupon for an ice cream, cookie, or something like that from local business. And I did try to phrase my comment in a respectful and appreciative manner.

Local businesses do face many challenges.

Some people think recycling plastics is the answer but that is far from the truth. There is way too much plastic for it to be recycled and most of it sits in big piles on land and at sea never to be recycled.

@Twins Mom If they're going to give out promotional gifts, what would you like? Seems like water bottles would be universally used. I take one to bed with me every night and use another during the day. I could use one for the car. People with kids probably use a ton of them as I'm sure they're often lost/misplaced.

Everyone needs to stay hydrated.

@Kachina624 my issue with them is how many does one person need taking up space in the kitchen cabinet. When my husband worked and would go to trade shows they would give them out. I finally had to tell him stop taking them. We didn't need them and no one wanted them, so yeah they would end up in the garbage.

The company I work for gave us a YETI mug one conference and a large YETI tumbler the next year. Everyone loved the quality. I used a Contiga travel mug from QVC for years. It really kept hot, hot and cold, cold for hours.

I normally choose not to take the giveaways if I have no use for them. Just more “stuff” to get rid of.
