I'm fascinated by whales and their humongous size but it's real!y hard to get an accurate idea of how big they are. I think this video, more than most, really gives you a feel for their size.

@Kachina624 Just WOW... Last year when we were in Maine we went on a whale watch. It was so amazing it practically took my breath away.. The video you posted was amazing...DW

@dancingwoman My sister and I went whale watching in Alaska but even then, we were some distance away and you couldn't appreciate their size. This video really give you a picture of their size.

@Kachina624 there is a video on youtube that shows a couple of women who visit a mother whale and her baby. They rub him and talk to him and the whale seems to love it. Not sure what kind of whale but it's big.

I touched a whale with my hand once. It was a Gray whale, that came up to the small boat we were in, to look at us up close. The whale came to the surface and we could see its big eyeball peering at us within feet of the boat so I reached out and touched the side of its 'face'.

Later that same day there was a beached baby Gray near our camp. The group of people I was with were all scientists, veterinarians and research people. One vet gave the baby Gray some antibiotics and then we all pushed the baby back out to sea in hopes that the mama would find it. But the next day the baby whale was beached again, dead unfortunately.

Saw a hallmark movie not long ago called A Splash of Love.
It was all about whales! Some beautiful aerial shots of them together as they were moving into coves, etc. I didn't think the movie was very good but really loved the many shots of the whales.

@SilleeMee What did the whale skin feel like? They often appear to be covered with barnacles and very rough. I always wanted to touch one.

I read the experience of a kayaker that got extremely close to a humpback just as it exhaled through its blowhole. He said he got drenched in slimy, fishy snot. I bet that took some of the fun out of it.

It was such a brief touch. It wasn't like I petted the whale. I remember it was a smooth section I touched. The whale only had his eye out of the water. It was huge! I touched right next to it...!

The beached baby whale was very smooth, soft and it had fine hair on the top part near the blow holes. One of the biologists there said the baby was only a couple of days old.

@SilleeMee The baby was probably sick or had a congenital defect. It could have become separated from mom. I saw a video of killer whales harassing a blue whale and her calf off the California coast. They'll often kill the baby

The American Museum of Natural History in NY has a scale model of one of one hanging from the ceiling in the Hall of Ocean Life. As a kid, it scared me witless. Still not my favorite gallery.

Thank you for sharing this incredible video. What beautiful creatures they are. Total respect for them and so sad how they are treated.
