No Sense Of Self Preservation

I watched a video this morning of 2 gigantic bison (males can go a ton) fighting head to head on a road in Yellowstone.

Cars were stopped along the road and 2 people (weren't kids either) were out of their car probably 12/15 ft. from the animals just filming away like there were 2 pandas tusseling. Other people yelled at them to move and they finally did. Get in your car, cars do have windows and you could film from some safety.

Yes, people do dumb stuff. I've done dumb stuff, loaded the washer, DW and forgot to turn it on, forgotten an ingredient in a recipe etc, but really nothing that would have gotten me killed.

There is a guy on You Tube in one of the Carolina, georgeous neighborgood, big porch on his house. He gets bears, big ones too, that come on his porch. They really like his bird feeders. He goes out on the porch and sits in a chair while the bears are wandering a few feet away. & talks to them. One bear had her cubs with her.

Comments were aww, she knows you are her friend etc. It is a wild animal, not a friend. Someday Mama bear might swipe his face off.

Yikes! No sense of self preservation.

I see shear stupidity, at times jerks like them cause animals to be killed and resources to be spent, rescuers put at risk. Stupidity and selfishness.

@IMW I get that seeing bison in person must be jaw dropping but holy cow.

If they folks hadn't moved and had gotten squished between the car and a ton of PO's bison I would hope it was known from the video it was the humans fault and not the animal.

The bear guy made me think of Tim Treadwell who filmed grizzlies. He seemed to think they were this friends......right up to when they ate him and his girlfriend.

@CrazyKittyLvr2 I totally agree with your assessment of people who are oblivious. I am furious that it is the animals who suffer the consequences of humans' stupidity. A few years ago, four bear were euthanized because a man was feeding them and attracting them to his house. One of them scratched him and the entire group was put down because he had made them comfortable interacting with humans.

People aren't living in reality. They seem to be disconnected from what happens in the wild with wild animals. I went off on a woman who wanted the game wardens to destroy a bear who was coming onto her back deck to eat her bird seed and drink her hummingbird juice. I informed her she was the one who built a new home in their forest and then set a buffet table for them. I explained she needed to remove her bird feeders and hummingbird feeders and the bear would leave. She didn't want to do that, so then I explained she was the one who moved into their home, not the other way around. She finally said that she hadn't thought of it that way.

Too many people these days are self-absorbed and unaware.

Some people get displaced from reality by watching too many videos and shows about wild animals. For some reason being in harms way isn't part of the equation.

@On It Our neighbor's big bull, horns and all, would sashshay into our yard and snack on the grass.

We never went out near him. He would stand and stare at us with a dopey look, but it was still big with horns. No matter how docile it may seem I didn't trust him.

@CrazyKittyLvr2 Yikes! Scary as bulls are big and dangeous. Did the neighbors hurry and put it back in? We've lived out where neighbors' cattle would break through the fence and be wandering out on the road and sometimes in our yard eating the grass AND leaving lovely cow pies in our yard!

Three people have been gored by bison just this summer in Yellowstone. I've been to Yellowstone several times, it's a nice three day trip from here. I've seen those massive beasts from a vehicle. No way would I get that close. My family used to go there when I was a kid. The bears would be on the roadway and we would roll down the windows and feed them. That's forbidden now and the bears have been relocated farther up in the park to protect both them and us. Still, people have been attacked in their camping tents by bears looking for food.

Years ago when we went to Yellowstone Park, at the entrance to the Park we were given information about the Park. In the paperwork it stressed DO NOT go near the wildlife, especially the bears. The Park Ranger handing out information also stressed please stay away from all wildlife, especially the bears.

We weren't 50 yards past the entrance into the Park. There were two bear cubs that had climbed a tree. And there was a large crowd of people out under the tree taking pictures.

My brother and I were trying to see where Momma was. But weren't sure where the Momma was. Thankfully my Dad just wanted to get away from that mess.

And the area where I live has one of the nations highest rate of deer killed by cars. And you hear all the time, people complaining that the deer was crossing the road in front of their car. I guess they expect the deer to wait for the light to turn green before crossing.

@KKJ Yes, they came and got him eventually.

About 10 or 12 years ago he had another bull. That one came in the yard too. For some reason that bull did not like DD's car. She went out one day and there were dents and dirt all over it. And animal hair.

Yep, the bull had taken it's head & horns and rub and pushed dents all over the car. It needed new truck lid, hood, doors etc. There was nearly $6000 in damages. You should have heard that call to State Farm.

Guess what, 8 months later the bull did it again. $5000 that time.

She told insurance company about the bull in the yard and who owned him. I assume State Farm called him.

Bull was suddenly gone.

My parents were camping in their RV at Yellowstone some years ago. Mom went out side where there was a big bull bison quietly grazing. The dumbest mother on earth was out there with what appeared to be a five year old daughter trying to get her to pet the bison so she could take a picture. The child was already dangerously c!ose.

My mother verbally turned her every way but loose and got so loud the embarrassed woman backed off as people took notice.

I've been up shoulder to shoulder with a bull bison and they're even bigger than they appear in pictures. There was one in a sturdy stall at a livestock auction where we had horses boarded. He was against the outside of the pipe fence of his stall and I stood next to him. I was then 5' 5" and his shoulder was over my head. They are massive.

@Kachina624 Eons ago DH and I went to an open house at business that did artificial insemenation at farms in the area. They had huge barns that housed the bulls. I had seen big bulls, so I thought, since I moved here. These bulls were beyond huge. It was one of a handful of times in my life when I literally stopped in my tracks. Those barns were temp controlled, immaculate etc. They were some pampered animals.

Some people just CRAVE that 15 minutes of fame on social media so they jump in an animal enclosure at the zoo to take a photo....and sometimes the animal has be destroyed if it attacks the unwelcomed stranger....OR these idiots will take a selfie in a dangerous position on the Grand Canyon or mountain and some paid the price when they fell to their DEATH!!!! PEOPLE ARE PLAIN STUPID with no common sense!

Interesting timing. Freya, a 1300 lb walrus in Norway, was killed because she presented a risk to boaters (she would climb aboard and lounge on moored boats) and the people who could not stay away when she sunned herself on the pier.

At our former mountain place, our neighbor across the driveway would fill bird feeders against the developments stipulations. She got tired of the bears pulling apart the simple feeders.

I watched from our sunroom as a " teenager " bear stood on hind legs and took down the new metal bird feeder she had just put up and literally pulled the metal disc top from the bottom metal disc. Cars were lined up watching this event. No more bird feeders ! Or, should I say, " bear " feeders ?

We had visited South Dakota a few years back and stayed at the Creekside Lodge and did a Buffalo safari. It was pretty spectacular and of course we were all versed in the safety rules prior to going. It's an off road experience and they are all around you. We even had to stop for awhile as they were crossing in front of us. While out there we actually saw people walking around the area. Our guide was calling it in to the park rangers. She also warned them as they can be roaming quietly and suddenly charge as a pack which I imagine is quite frightening. She told those people, if they charge you, you will not win...... Enough said.

ITA ..... Years ago I recall a comedian's skit about stupid things humans do, not thinking about how dumb and dangerous their acts were, and they would die from really, really stupid actions. He said it was God's way of thinning the human herd. Not sure, but it might have been George Carlin.

It was funny, but later I thought about it more .... how do people actually make it to adulthood with so little common sense?

One of the things that bothers me the most about this brand of stupidity is that humans will do idiotic stuff like this, get hurt, then the animal gets killed.

It wasn't the animal's fault. It is probably 99.99% of the time the fault of the human. I'm NOT saying the human should be killed. But I AM saying that the animal, in most cases, should not be killed.
