Chokecherry Jelly

We had a bumper crop this year. Managed to pic 20lbs. Let the birds have the rest. Gave some away, froze some, and made a batch of jelly this morning..DW

Some varieties of chokecherries are more palatable than others, and the cultivated chokecherry is described as having a mildly sweet, cherry taste. With the addition of sugar, chokecherries are often used to make jam, syrup, and fruit pies. Chokecherry wine is somewhat comparable to wine made from grapes.

I have heard of chokeberry but not chokecherry and have never gotten to try either.

@Kachina624 They grow wild here in the mountains. I planted some years ago from starts I bought from the Soil Conservation district...they have a single stone in them like cherries..very acrid tasting...they need sugar to make them edible...DW

@dancingwoman Isn't that gratifying seeing the result of your hard work?

We have Chokecherries in N. WI. The Woodland Indians, Ojibwe used to pick them also. I know Chokecherry syrup is also made for pancakes etc. or jelly. I have never made the jelly. Thank you for sharing.

I'm so jealous! I love chokecherry jelly. My mother used to make it and we put it on toast, pancakes, and PBJs. Brings back lots of memories. The bushes used to grow wild in the canyon above the city. My dad, mom, little brother and I used to go up in the canyon the pick them. The bushes are gone now and replaced by Interstate 80.

The closest thing I can find in the store is red currant jelly.

@ECBG We live in Colorado..our elevation is 7000ft. So we aren't a hot area per say...now this summer during the day has been pretty warm but our nights are in the 50s..we've had good crops other years but if you don't catch them the day they ripen the birdies will...we leave all the top cherries for them..

As a kid in upstate NY we had a chokecherry bush in our yard so they must grow in different areas of the country. DW
