One time I lost power for 4 days in the early spring when temperatures were still freezing. Nothing electrical worked, of course, except my laptop and wifi router b/c I had those plugged into a large power bank. But that only lasted for less than a few hours. My dear friend helped me out with his gas generator and saved the day!...or 4 days I should say.

Lessons were learned that day. It was a big wake-up call so I took action and bought my very own gasoline generator and I also bought a larger power bank for my wifi router, laptop and VoIP phone. The larger power bank will give me power for 72 hours straight, for my electronics, plus the thing can recharge my cell phone and tablet if I needed them. Staying connected to the internet for me is very important. It's a source for vital information about power outages and other critical news info. Now I have peace of mind.

It started raining about 3 this afternoon. No big storm just rumbles of thunder and a nice steady much needed rain.

Rain stopped about 4, skies started to clear and bingo, power went out. Seems a llitle town 15 miles from here had a whale of a storm and a substation was damaged. 1/2 of our township was without power and the township with the storm was 100% out.

DD was bringing supper home anyway so I twiddled my thumbs until she got home a little before 7. We ate and had a rousing game of Scrabble by flashlight.

Juice came back on about 8:15 or so.

3 months ago almost to the day we had no power for 2 and 1/2 days due to ice storm.

Man we lose power alot.

We lost power 1 week after Sandy; that was the worst. A couple of months ago, we lost power 12 hours and the town evacuated our building. Today, in northern NJ, we have a water advisory ( going on 2 days) due to E. coli in our drinking water. I’ll be looking out the window for locusts.

Re EVs, you won’t need a garage, there are charging stations already in the next town. In NJ, condominiums (where I live), I read it will eventually be mandated that charging stations be installed. We live in an all electric building and already have an energy shortage we’ve been trying to address. I know that we would not be able to handle the extra burden at present. They need to find solutions before mandating EVs. & work on infrastructure. The power grids can not take it; we see what happens with AC & increased demand.

A few years ago, after a bad spring storm that took down trees and power lines, we were without power for 4 days. Some in the area were without power for over a week. I worked from home and I did not want to commute to the office so I stayed in a hotel for 3 days.

Last September power was off for a mere 3 hours but when it came back on, no water. Whatever happened fried the well pump. That was a Tuesday night at 7pm. We finally got water on Fri afternoon. Luckily it wasn't freezing or really hot but no water sucks.

April 2022 was the ice storm, 2.5 days.

There are basically 2 power companies in the area. One is a co-op (what we have now) Where we lived before we had the other company. In the 27 yrs. we were in that house on the other side of town I can count on one hand the times the power went out. The lights never even flickered during the blizzard of 1993.

Now, every couple of months it's out for several hours, with or without bad weather.

And what happens when you cant get fossil fuels for your generators????....Oh and here's some "fun" one of those "wonderful" windmills that are useless without wind, caught fire after a lightning strike....just what we need 🙄

With two rate increases (one to catch up due to increase in market charges for fuel during the 2021 winter) and another rate increase for upgrading systems here locally in South Texas...PLUS our normal Fuel Adjustment Charge during the summer due to high demand....I guess our energy company, CPSENERGY...thought hey why dont we spend more money$$$$$ utility bills are exorbitant already....so check this out...they actually hired a full time Meteorologist to explain to customers the impact of weather on the Grid!!!!!! The SAD thing it was NOT THE CUSTOMERS, but the ENERGY EXECUTIVES were the ones that paid no attention to the local meteorologists warnings on the 4 local channel newscasts, I guess they dont watch the news but should have!!!! SO JUST ANOTHER WASTE OF RATEPAYER MONEY!
😡🤬

I was on vacation in Seattle Washington a few weeks back, and I used Uber a lot from my hotel. Every car that came was some sort of EV or hybrid.

I live in California and see them out here as well. Not as much as when I was in Seattle. My aunt even has a Tesla that she absolutely loves, but she is retired so she does not need to use it as much as a daily commuter would.

Next year my car will be 10 years old and I plan on purchasing another one. I am currently interested in a hybrid. One that uses both gas and electricity. I do have concerns that have been mentioned in this thread, and others. Our power grid across the united states are not in the best of shape, so what will that do to a already limited resource. I have seen where some have mentioned that they are living in places where power goes out due to storms. What would the cost be to replace a battery? I have not researched battery replacement costs yet, but I have seen more than once where people have said that they can cost up to $10,000. I am not sure if those are actual cost or hyperbole. If that's the case then there will be no hybrid in my future.

Lastly, I am by no means rich and I disagree that EV's are Rich peoples toys or second vehicles. For me personally I am tired of being held hostage to the whims of outside forces (meaning the cost of crude oil) to decide what gas prices are going to be. I sort of thinking it as hedging my bets with being able to use both sources for fuel.

At the risk of sounded dumb, why is electricity in Texas so expensive.

We have a 1300 sq. ft. house. It is old and not well insulated, we use home heating oil.

Our electric bill runs from $90ish in the summer with several fans going to $115 in the winter with the furnace running constantly in freezing weather.

We could start discussing the pros and cons of wind energy (Texas leads in that area) or solar energy (Texas is in the top 5) but perhaps we need to look at all variables.

Rates are highest (Hawaii is a given every year) in New England and parts of the North East.

Why? Same with CA.

We could look at all the variables because one question with one answer doesn't cover the issue completely.
