@depglass Good idea - I haven't been to Goodwill recently, but I know that's what my favorite thrift shop does. I regularly donate all shopping bags as well as non-food plastic bags every time I drop things off.

NJ has been bring your own bags since May.

Last night we went out for a bite to eat and our drinks came with paper straws, well that was just gross and actually ruined my iced tea. My son-in-law is a district manager for a chain restaurant and has two locations out of state. I asked him to bring home some of the plastic straws for us. I will keep them in my bag and bring them home to rinse out.

I live in Delaware and single use plastic bags were outlawed in January 2020. Bad idea. Most stores just went to thicker multi-use plastic bags which in reality would not be used very often for multi uses. So they changed the law again as of July 2022 to no plastic bags. Some stores have switched to paper but some don't offer bags at all - Target.

@ninjawife So, if a customer like me--who doesn't drive--goes to Target in Delaware I am supposed to bring my own bags even though I don't know what, or how much of anything, I am going to buy?

And if I don't have any with me do they have bags you can buy at the checkout that most supermarkets have--they have a film of some kind--a coating--over some other material and a web type handle?

My curious mind wants to know.

I don't mind the discontinuance of the plastic bags but think a store should offer a paper substitute even if I am charged someething reasonable for it.

I keep a couple of lightweight nylon bags that roll up into a ball in my purse for emergencies but they only hold so much.

Steel, aluminum or strong plastic straws are available and can be washed in dishwasher. They take up practically no room in a purse. Use different colors for different family members.

@aroc3435 I don't know if it's the same all over but Target in NY & NJ sell these cheap, reusable (up to 125 uses) bags at the registers.

Honestly, I don't know what they are made from, they're not plastic, they're not really a fabric. Shoprite sells them too, they look exactly like the old plastic bags but made out of this new stuff.

My husband bought one at Shoprite, to it back to re-use at the self-checkout and the watcher wanted to know if he was going to pay for it. We were smart enough to write our name on it just for that purpose.

@aroc3435 If you can get a phone number for your local store it's probably best to call them and see what's going on with the bag situation.

What I meant to add was that a few years back the Suffolk County on LI signed into law a 5 cent charge for bags. At first you'd see people who hadn't remembered their on bags walk out of supermarkets carrying armsful, but increasingly over a few months more and more shoppers carried more and more bags. But some rolled out carts where those bags must have added $1.00 to their bill. I wouldn't do that often!

I wish someone would donate their plastic bags to me. If you reuse the bags, you are recycling.
They did away with them in NYC; like many other cities have already done. We are charged 5 cents if we want a bag.

@aroc3435 I live in an apartment complex. You are not allowed to throw your garbage in the compactor chute without bagging it. The same city officials banned the use of those same plastic bags that we recycled when we threw away our trash. So now instead of recycling those supermarket bags; I buy Glad trash bags.

I try to remember to carry a nylon bag. Sometimes you don't realize you're going to stop in a department store or supermarket. 😃 It's a spontaneous activity when you're walking around NYC.

As posted, NJ supermarkets do not give out plastic bags. Since the pandemic, I've reused the same bags since 2020. I wiped them down & sprayed them during the early stages of COVID & just continued the practice. I also purchased biodegradable trash bags on Amazon for $18.99 (60 count) for garbage.

in the supermarket, sometimes you need a plastic bag when you purchase meat as liquid runs out of the package onto your groceries. We just take a plastic bag from the produce department & place the meat in that if we forget to pack a biodegradeable bag in our shopping bags.

they do sell usable bags at the checkout counter.

Not really, I used to re-use the plastic bags for when I cleaned the litter box they still ended up in the landfill.

@aroc3435 I have only been through the self check out at two different Targets and neither had any bags, not even reusable one to purchase. Now the law just went into effect on July 1 so maybe they will eventually offer a bag to purchase. Both times I only bought a handful of things so I just carried them out in my hands. I have reusable bags that I use for groceries but they were not in the car at the time.

@ninjawife Thank you for your detailed reply. It's early for sure since your state law was just implemented. If and when this kind of legislation is proposed for DC I will have some knowledge so I can exercise what tiny input I have since we have so little representative government recourse since Congress has the final say for so much of what the District attempts to propose and enact.

It's ddefinitely the biggest aspect of life I miss since relocating from Connecticut to DC four years and ten months ago.
