Auto companies collecting data

Was reading that auto companies are collecting data from onboard navigation systems. On Star would be one example.

There is speculation that this data could be used to target advertising, etc.

My car has OnStar, but I do not subscribe to it. I suppose it can still be activated and looked at.

Forgive me if I appear to be wearing a tinfoil hat, but this kind of thing is really starting to bug me. I don't do anything that anyone would be interested in, but it's getting to where you feel spied upon all the time.

Surveillance cameras, govt. in your cell phones, computer, your car, etc.

Do we really have freedom anymore? I say not much now.

I think I heard something someplace that when you take your car in to have service done on it, they sometimes put something under your car that tells the speed you are going, etc. And, this wouldn't surprise me.

People willingly put the most personal, intimate details of their lives on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. - and then they get paranoid about being spyed on???

I don't do anything worth keeping track of either. Nope, you're not alone. I'm tired of all of this and don't believe it's being done for my protection. Everyday we give up a little more. Read The Hunger Games. I see a lot of similarities, and possibly a sign of things to come. Paranoid? No, I don't think so.

Many of your freedoms were lost after 9/11/01. Just by turning on your computer, logging onto QVC, click on a product and then see that item 'pop up' on other sites..i.e. your email provider.

They can spy on my nav system all they want. If they can figure out how to use it they can then come give me lessons!

Those grocery cards? I have one and today I received an email telling me how much money I saved last year using their special coupons based on my shopping habits. Not bad at all....

No, more personal than Viewpoints.

FB has pictures, names, links to other friends and their real names, etc.

FB uses your info and sells it to advertisers.

That doesn't go on here...unless your name is REALLY Jane.

my personal pet peeve is retailers who routinely ask for your E mail address when paying. I always ask why they want it and THEN they tell you they want to send you coupons. They never ask you if you want to be on their stupid list first.

Love your answer, very funny. One grocery store I use with a savings card started sending me coupons for things I actually use. At first I thought it was a fluke, but after many months the lightbulb came on and it realized they knew my shopping habits because of my card. I'm sure there are many more things that are known about me. You can run, but you can't hide!

I went to pier 1 before Christmas and they asked for my name, address and email address before they would ring me up. I declined.

Why? Just curious, since your name, address and phone number are most likely in your phone book. You could tell them you don't use email. Most every store I go to now asks for my phone number, I guess to see if we are already in their database for a mailing list. Nothing much is private these days so it doesn't bother me. People fail to realize how much of their lives are captured... think of the security cameras in stores, not to mention the cameras mounted at every traffic signal, and cameras on buildings that watch the streets. Not much of your existence in the big bad world isn't being monitored by someone. Now we have people taking videos with their cell phones, and the technology of sunglasses that take video, so you could be talking to someone and have no idea they are recording your entire exchange on video with their sunglasses. I just assume I am being watched by someone, somewhere. Home seems like the only safe place, but who knows, maybe my DirectTV boxes have spy cams in them. Ohhh, thinking about that, I sure hope not lol.
