FASCINATING NEW FLAG NEWS FOR FLAG DAY!

How's that for a mouthful? There's a new porposed flag project to honor all 24 million veterans from the Revolutionary War to the present day-- it's called "Flagpole of Freedom".

It will be a massive remembrance park in Columbia Falls in the state of Maine, with a flagpole taller than the Empire State Building, and a flag the size of 1 and 1/2 football fields-- the largest ever U.S. flag, WBZ radio reports.

The park will have 6 different museums, flagpole observation decks, 55 remembrance walls inscribed with every deceased veteran in the U.S.

The monument will contain a 4,000 seat venue, and will cover 2500 acres of land in Columbia Falls, Maine, which is about an hour from Bar Harbor.

These drawings of the proposal are neat! This globe with observation decks is the top of the flagpole.

Washington County was chosen as it has been losing population and faltering economically. Flagpole of Freedom is expected to provide 8000 year round jobs, and generate 27 million annually in tax revenue, WBZ reports. The first phase will cost one billion dollars, and will be privately funded.

I love this additional way of honoring veterans, and providing such a unifying and educational spot for families, citizens, and history lovers from across the world. Go, Flagpole of Freedom! Proposed opening would be 2026, to coincide with the nation's 250th anniversary.

I don't know, @chiclets -- the news reports mentioned private donations, which I imagine are from a variety of sources, including individual donors.

Sounds like a great idea but it ought to be more centrally located so more people could visit. Most will never make it that far North.

@chiclets @Oznell Balance of Nature provided a parade and transportation for "Big Betsy"- our flag measuring 150' long and weighing 500 lbs. I believe it was a parade in Utah last year.

Very interesting! Will people travel to the observation deck / globe by tram or is there an elevator inside the flagpole? I imagine the structure, while free-standing, would be secured by guy wires.

World record holder Tom Jones is running over 1900 miles from Alabama to Utah to help build the American Village West. Every Patriot Pack sold of Balance of Nature will help fund the campus at Freedom Summit.

This is not project Oznell shared but is the one I was referring to.

I Love the idea of it. I would love to see the museums and remembrance walls. Also a place dedicated to surviving Vets and all the benefits and organizations available to them.

I also Really want be in that flagpole observatory during a thunder storm!

Am guessing the location is based on the land and how much was donated or set aside for it. It looks like beautiful country...I had not seen anything about it but I love the idea of every Veteran being remebered.

Uh-oh, I was all set to be up in those high observation decks, @candys mine , until the thought of thunder storms up there, eeek. Feel some vertigo coming on, ha. But the views would be tremendous, I bet.

Yes, @Trailrun23 , Maine is so very beautiful. Agreed, the idea of all the vets through the nation's history, being recognized in one place, strikes me as such a good one.

Looks stunning. As long as this ball will be an enclosed feature w/ windows it should be nice for those who like heights. If it will be open air it could turn into an awful mess like the Vessel built in NYC not long ago. Beautiful. It's closed, however, because some chose to go there to commit suicide.

@Oznell The pitcures look like it will be a Very large metal Faraday Cage.

Lightning, being the lazy beast that it is, Should run along the outside of the metal and down the tower to the ground. Just remember to bring your ear plugs!

I wonder if there's a way to charge a battery with lightning?

Ha, that's good to know about lightning being harmlessly misdirected, @candys mine ! Yah, it's too bad we can't harness lightning for our purposes in the midst of this energy mess...
