No AC or whole house HEAT. Have a heat pump in our patio room.

Our old forced air heater had a neat feature. Since the air in your basement is cooler than the upstairs air in summer, you could take the back door off the heater and slide it into the air filter slot and the air filter would then slide in where the back door of the heater was. You could then turn on the fan and it would pull the cool air from the basement up into the house. They designed it for that purpose and it worked very well. You could lower the upstairs temperature a good ten degrees for nothing more than the cost of operating the fan. I was more than a little surprised to find it wasn't a feature on every heater and was no longer available when we got a new heater about 25 years ago.

I try to keep my thermostat on 78 in the summer to save electricity. If I turn the fan "on" instead of "auto", I find the house stays a bit cooler and the unit doesn't have to run so much. If the temps aren't too bad outside and the a/c doesn't come on much, the air gets stale. I'll usually turn it (the fan) on around noon and off again around 6 PM. I think it makes a big difference in my power costs.

@bobby5 In MD we had the fan running 24/7 as BG&E (Baltimore Gas and Electric) states it is more efficient in the summer for keeping the house cool. We also had an attic fan which came on at a specific temp.

Here in Florida, we do NOT have the fan running; it only comes on when the ac comes on. Initially we did but was informed that this was NOT efficient and made things worse so do not do it. So we don't.

To be honest, it's hot and humid in both places so not sure why one says you should and the other says you shouldn't. *shrugs*
