Yes my grandfather was under Patton....was at Omaha beach, he made it out. 10,000 died in one day on that beach.

@Italian gal Yes, Freedom is not free! My mother had 6 brothers in WWII at the same time. One never returned and she said her mom was devastated by the loss of her mini me as I understand it, sad. Lots of people gave it all for our privileges we have today.

D-Day should never be forgotten. It could arguably be identified as the day that saved the world. Imagine what Europe would have become without it. It is sad that many of our American young people cannot understand (or do not care about) the impact of what happened on the beaches of Normandy on June 6, 1944.

Also, one the few wars in which national unity was apparent and all strata of society (men) contributed. It's all so sad. One of the soldiers was on the news today and talked about his experiences and the sadness resulting from seeing so many 18 year-olds die. Military bases honor them with 50 gun salutes today. Truly valient men and some women.

Yes, June 6th, 78 years ago was/is called D-Day. Unfortunately, it is not even made recognized, by those you think would do so. Like others, even those that are National Holidays, most do not even know the real meaning of them.

Many cannot tell you the difference between Memorial Day 🇺🇸 and Veterans Day 🇺🇸. Soon June 6th will just be another day on the calendar, with no concern with all those, many teenagers, that gave their lives so we could live ours. A shame!!!

I was 8 years old and my Father was coming home after 4 years on the frontlines.
I saw some young kids being interviewed on TV and asked about what Memorial Day meant to them. With blank looks on their faces, they didn't know what Memorial Day was .
The other night, I was starting to watch the basketball game between the SF Warriors and Celtics. At the opening when the Star Bangle banner was sung, SC was talking to another player next to him and one of the Celtic players turned and walked away. These young people should be grateful they live in the US that gives them the opportunity to make so much money. True they have talent, but they disrespect our Flag. I refuse to watch the game anymore.
Kids younger than they went to war to protect this country, so they can have the life they have today.
My Grandmother was not an American citizen, she was an immagrent from Italy, but my Dad went in the service.
She could not be outside after sundown or before sunset, because of Hitler and the Italian government were allies.
Look what happened with the American born Jappinese and the interment camps. The Italians had the same, but not on such a grand scale. These young people today have it good, makes me sick what this world or America has turned into and those boys hopefully did not fight in vain.

This country also had WWI. I never see anyone remembering or discussing that one. It seems the further we get from when the war happened, unless you were alive then, people forget. I remember some of my elderly relatives talking about the Civil War happening when they were young. It's about each and every war America was in and those who were alive at the time are the ones who can really relate.

We're here to mark that day in history when the Allied armies joined in battle to reclaim this continent to liberty. For four long years, much of Europe had been under a terrible shadow. Free nations had fallen, Jews cried out in the camps, millions cried out for liberation. Europe was enslaved, and the world prayed for its rescue. Here in Normandy the rescue began. Here the Allies stood and fought against tyranny in a giant undertaking unparalleled in human history.

We stand on a lonely, windswept point on the northern shore of France. The air is soft, but forty years ago at this moment, the air was dense with smoke and the cries of men, and the air was filled with the crack of rifle fire and the roar of cannon. At dawn, on the morning of the 6th of June, 1944, 225 Rangers jumped off the British landing craft and ran to the bottom of these cliffs. Their mission was one of the most difficult and daring of the invasion: to climb these sheer and desolate cliffs and take out the enemy guns. The Allies had been told that some of the mightiest of these guns were here and they would be trained on the beaches to stop the Allied advance.

The Rangers looked up and saw the enemy soldiers -- the edge of the cliffs shooting down at them with machineguns and throwing grenades. And the American Rangers began to climb. They shot rope ladders over the face of these cliffs and began to pull themselves up. When one Ranger fell, another would take his place. When one rope was cut, a Ranger would grab another and begin his climb again. They climbed, shot back, and held their footing. Soon, one by one, the Rangers pulled themselves over the top, and in seizing the firm land at the top of these cliffs, they began to seize back the continent of Europe. Two hundred and twenty-five came here. After two days of fighting, only ninety could still bear arms.

Behind me is a memorial that symbolizes the Ranger daggers that were thrust into the top of these cliffs. And before me are the men who put them there.

These are the boys of Pointe du Hoc. These are the men who took the cliffs. These are the champions who helped free a continent. These are the heroes who helped end a war...

... Here, in this place where the West held together, let us make a vow to our dead. Let us show them by our actions that we understand what they died for. Let our actions say to them the words for which Matthew Ridgway listened: "I will not fail thee nor forsake thee."

Strengthened by their courage, heartened by their valor, and borne by their memory, let us continue to stand for the ideals for which they lived and died.

My grandmother and my mom also immigrated from Italy. My dad was a drunk that left my mom to raise my 4 sisters and myself. Serve his country? He wouldn't even take care of his family.

Must not teach American History any more in the schools. Too many I see interviewed on the beaches, and even on college campuses, had no idea what Memorial Day meant. To them it was just a long weekend.

I quit watching the NBA and the NFL years ago because of the way many viewed our country. The only 2 Professional Sports I still watch are the NHL and Nascar. Both show great respect for our country, and Nascar had a special ceremonies, prior to the race a week ago last Sunday.

Each car had a Military person, that died while serving, on the windshield of their cars. The families of that Fallen Hero were also given tickets and all expenses to attend the race. The driver of their daughter or son met each family member and told them the memory of their Hero would be riding with them the whole race. That is true Patriotism!

It's another beautifully crafted speech from Peggy Noonan and I only posted a portion of it.

The entire text is definitely worth a read.

I thought the photo was interesting. Can you imagine climbing with those hooks? Amazing human beings.
