I would stay home where it is warm and safe. Didn't you say you went out yesterday and it became whiteout conditions? You got blown over and rolled down the street (sorry, that did make me chuckle, but only because I have been there when the wind is so brutal you can't keep your footing). Work out at home, pop in an exercise dvd or find one online. Jog in place in front of the tv or run up and down your stairs. Lots of ways to exercise at home. I know lots of people are suffering cabin fever now, but it's much safer to be warm and protected than risk being out and caught in an accident. Walking is no fun either. Last night I had to run out to the store, on my way I passed an older man shuffling along carrying groceries, both hands loaded with a couple of heavy plastic bags. He had on a coat and gloves, but only jeans and tennis shoes, not boots. It was not snowing, but it was down in single digits and the snow we do have is still piled up on sidewalks and streets. He looked frozen. I thought maybe he was getting to his car, but as I watched in my rearview mirror he continued to walk down the road. I hesitated for a moment, then turned my car around and went back. When I pulled up next to him he stopped. I got out and asked him if he had far to go, he said not too far. So I asked him if I could give him a lift. He just replied "yes ma'am". We loaded his groceries in my back seat and he got in my car that was nice and warm. He kept saying thank you and he appreciated it. I told him I thought perhaps he was almost to his car, but when I saw him still walking I had to turn back. Not a night for anyone to be out in those conditions for long, especially hauling two heavy handfuls of groceries. When I saw the shopping bags I realized he had come from the Dollar General store which would have been about 3/4 mile away from where I picked him up. So the man had nearly a 4 mile roundtrip walk in the frigid cold. I was only able to help him take off the last mile, but he was appreciative and I was glad I went back for him. Other cars had passed him and didn't stop.

In these kind of horrible conditions terrier, don't put yourself at risk. You'll be able to get back to your gym soon enough. Stay safe and warm.

What am I missing? I used to live where the temps in winter were typically below 0 - as much as 20 to 30 below. And we didn't even know what the wind chill was. We went to work and school etc.

What is so different now? Is this because of global warming or something that everyone is freaking out?

Tuesday is the regular bread delivery day at my local store...

It's winter for crying out loud, snow and cold are to be expected.

The blizzard warning issued by the National Weather Service is what's different about this. Most who live in western NY do not mind the snow and cold and are used to it. I've lived in many cold climates and western New Yorkers are a very hardy bunch. Where I live it's not unusual to see 250 to 300 inches of snow a year. Being careful in 60-70 mph winds and sub zero temperatures with snow is wise in my opinion. A lot of the "freaking out" comes from officials who wish to avoid tragedy and broadcasters going a little crazy because of the unusual conditions. There are many in this area who do not have adequate winter clothes, including children who must walk to school. I don't see where it's freaking out to want them to be safe and call school off until the weather passes. I've seen too many tragedies in brutal cold conditions and feel that it's okay to err on the side of caution when conditions warrant. I grew up in upstate New Hampshire where it's a lot colder than it is here...I went skiing when it was 10, 20 below zero and got frostbite for my foolishness of insisting on being out in it.

Now they've become nanny's and warn about everything.

If you want to go to the gym, go. Bundle up to keep warm. My son is skiing right now. The station had run out of gas...I ended up having to abandon my car and get a room at a fleabag motel. I was stuck for two days at the hotel. My car was hit by a plow ($6000 damage) and had been towed along with hundreds of other cars. State troopers were nice, they drove me around to parking lots until we found my car.

I was luckier than many...other people were stuck on the Thruway...people actually died.

Most schools here are closed and people are laughing because we all walked MILES in cold, snow, sleet, rain. But I think its good they closed. Rather safe than sorry.

On 1/7/2014 Dagna said:
What am I missing? I used to live where the temps in winter were typically below 0 - as much as 20 to 30 below. And we didn't even know what the wind chill was. We went to work and school etc.

What is so different now? Is this because of global warming or something that everyone is freaking out?

I think it's the cold coupled with the snow. There have been tons of accidents and car fatalities around here. The roads are like ice. There was a city plow truck that slid off the road into a ditch. A 90-year-old woman died in Ohio when her car got stuck in the snow and she tried to walk back home. They found her face down in the snow. It's not safe for kids to walk to school when it's -40 out.

We had a bad Buffalo storm in 2000 that hit in the afternoon.

School buses were stranded...people opened their homes to entire buses of kids, who had to stay overnight.

That was a DISASTER!

Back then kids didn't have cell phones like they do now...and parents were frantic.

And we're on Lake Michigan with a Winter Storm Warning.

Good thing I called...due to the driving ban, the gym is closed.

That would have been a REAL workout - walking 4 miles roundtrip in snowbanks!
