Queen and Parliment

Quenn Elizabeth is skipping the opening of Parliament for the first time in 60 years due to "mobility issues". Sounds like she need a little red scooter like mine. She could have one drawn by four white horses.

She seems to be declining rather rapidly.

I am presently watching a show on the Smithsonian Channel. It just had movies of her coronation and her tour of the Commonwealth. She was 25 when she became Queen.

So sad she is missing the opening of Parliament. She really has dedicated her life to being Queen of England.

She is and will be in history books as one of the most dedicated, even tempered, and much loved Queens.

What an accomplishment, for sure.

I wouldn't say she is declining rapidly, she is 96. She has to be cautious (Covid aside).

Not sure how close you are in age to her, but to the best of my knowledge she is/has been ambulatory all along and doesn't need a red scooter.

It would not surprise me if she "retires" & hands the crown down to Charles (& possibly make Camilla "Queen") by years end.

Sadly, I think the continued chaos created by her family may have accelerated her decline.

I sincerely wish her well, and hope if she does step aside, she is able to do so with her customary grace and decorum.

For the past few years it seemed like she was ever so slowly stepping back and giving others more responsibility.

This past couple decades have the royals dealing with new territory several times. Too many major changes, Andrew's scandal and now the commonwealth nations rumblings. They can only parade Will's kids around the cameras so many times a week.

If the queen would "retire" then Charles could take the reins while mom watched carefully. Sort of like Charles in king-ish training wheels. I mean, realistically, she couldn't retire and totally disappear. She wouldn't know what to do with herself.

The loss of her rock, Prince Philip, started her decline. She is a strong woman and has been able to handle all that has been thrown at her, but I think that was too much for her.

@Lucky Charm If she's citing mobility issues, apparently she needs help and is no longer ambulatory. At her age, she's entitled.

Phillip was a strong man, raised to rule Greece, he survived some heavy blows in his life. I have read that HRM likes to avoid conflict, I imagine he was her rock in this, and so many other ways. Lots of photos of them sharing a good laugh together.

Agree with you, What a loss to her.

I'm not sure if she can no longer walk, they said that it might have had to do with her having covid as it's a side effect of elderly people.

I'm pretty sure she is still able to walk. Not seeing it stated she can no longer walk....

I'm hoping to see her next month (pictures) for her big celebration. If she chooses to be seated, that great, too. She's 96!

My mind is going in the direction of yours, Mz iMac. After at first thinking that a decline in her health was solely accountable for the Queen's not opening Parliament, I also began to think that she is getting her subjects ready, little by little, for the time that Prince Charles leads the nation. Very wise. Get everyone used to Charles as King, and his transition should go more smoothly.

The Queen gets to lighten her load as they progress with this plan, and Charles acquires first-hand experience as the monarch.

The heading of this thread immediately made me think it was about the two bands: Queen (Freddy Mercury, etc) and Parliament (George Clinton, etc). My heart and mind are focused on good music!

She doesn't have to officially step away from royal duties, but she can certainly delegate a large portion of what she does to others. She'd be the figurehead with less appearances to make. No biggie to adjust the schedule that way.

Philip was in no way raised to "rule" Greece.

While born into the Greek royal family he was, at best, 6th in line to the throne at his birth in 1921.

Shortly thereafter the family fled Greece in exile after Greece's loss in the Greco-Turkish War.

The Greek monarchy was formally dissolved in 1922.

During his formative years in France and Great Britain his guardians did not raise him to take the Greek throne and had no view to restore that monarchy.

By the time the Greek monarchy was restored in 1935 he was firmly raised British and did not even speak Greek.
